The Only Quiet Room in a Sea of Jets: Introducing Virginia Beach’s Must-Visit Reiki and Meditation Studio
“Say, ‘Yes,’ to yourself totally.”
In a cozy, zen-boho inspired studio, laid on the plush healing table, a harried working mom quickly sinks deep in relaxation. Light pours through a Himalayan salt lamp while the scent of aromatherapy fills the air. Cars zoom in the distance, but the room is silent and miles away from the jet noise of F18 Hornets, save for the occasional low-toned prompt from the practitioner.
“Focus on happiness and the breath,” she says. And so begins a 60 minute self-realization journey, quieting the mind and becoming aware of the body. Just for today...
Welcome to AT THE WELL, a Reiki and meditation studio in Shore Drive that wants to bring the contemplative practice in its purest and authentic form to the well-heeled masses. Though similar concepts have popped up in the Virginia Beach Oceanfront area, AT THE WELL’s founder, Reamie Tabin, a military spouse, claim it’s the first of its kind in Virginia—and she’s intending to generate a new wave of interest in the ancient spiritual technique.
It was nearly four years ago that Tabin, one of the youngest teachers in Jikiden Reiki, was in the same shoes as most of her clients, searching for a way to relieve the heavy burden and daily stress of a high-performing professional mompreneur. She began practicing self-healing after experiencing a stressful time while her husband was on deployment. “That was the sweet spot, when people were starting to say, ‘Oh, I’m interested in trying,’ ” she says, “and I think in the last year, it’s really become quite big.” Tabin, is a former high-end wedding expert who turned her passion for holistic wellness into skill sets which she now uses as an educator, practitioner and speaker. After setting her mission of spreading truth and authenticity to one of the best complementary natural therapies available, Reamie decided that a healing studio dedicated solely on practicing and teaching authentic Japanese style Reiki, called Jikiden Reiki, would help make Reiki in its purest form (free from Western influence) and meditation more accessible to stressed-out military city dwellers.
Here, it gets the SoulCycle treatment: Guests are prompted to “yes, book my session” online for 45- , 60 - or 90-minute Reiki sessions facilitated by Tabin, whose treatments also include intuitive guidance, mind body consultation, and aromatherapy. As for Jikiden Reiki seminars and meditation classes, there’s Reamie’s background and heritage inheritance, a certified Shihan Kaku (teacher) of the Jikiden Reiki Institute in Kyoto, Japan, and up and coming author, who learned meditation as a young child from her spiritually devoted grandmother who practiced daily. “Integrity is very important to me, that being a teacher means I’m trained and know how to do it well,” Tabin says. For added approachability, the sessions and classes play on themes: A Sleep session lets you unwind, while Emotions might help you work through a difficult breakup.
Certainly, AT THE WELL will appeal to a certain breed of Virginia Beach goer—perhaps one who wishes that her Reiki experience is as authentic as her LV purse and as pure as the water she drinks —and Tabin has plans to make it stick. A series of one-off classes like Mindful Eating, in which students will learn to think through each bite, sounds particularly promising, and the light-filled community space provides a quiet gathering place for like-minded members. The path to enlightenment this is not, but as Reamie believes, if meditation, like Reiki, can bring people comfort and peace of mind, then that’s worth exploring—whether you decide to book your own session or not.
