The Body Remembers

Before I ever had the words for what I experienced, my body knew.

It knew every time my chest tightened in the middle of a “normal” conversation about an incident. It knew every time I smiled when I wanted to cry. It knew when I would laugh to show others I was ok when I spoke about it, as if my laugh could hide the truth.

For years, I thought those reactions were “just me" and my heart had healed. They were actually my body’s way of saying - you’re not safe here.

Learning to listen to those signals and then create safety for myself…that’s where my power came back.

Finally had the time and space to watch It Ends With Us. My daughter kept asking me to watch it. And now I know why.

When Lily asks her mom why she didn't leave . . . her mom answers that it was easier to stay.
