NUTRIBITS | DARK CHOCOLATE MAY REDUCE THE RISK OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
You may think that you cannot enjoy chocolate without being concerned about your health, but believe it or not, this treat, specifically dark chocolate, has been shown to have numerous significant health benefits, particularly for heart health.
Dark chocolate, when not loaded with fat or sugar or at least 70% purely dark, is rich in disease-fighting flavonoids, which are antioxidants that can be found in fruits and vegetables. Adults may have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), insulin resistance, and high blood pressure if they consume dietary flavonoids, especially those belonging to the flavanol subclass. It makes sense to connect the anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging properties of dark chocolate flavanols to CVD protective effects given that CVD is linked to a number of conditions that can cause oxidant production. The antioxidant properties of the flavanol are what actually cause the aforementioned advantages of dark chocolate. These flavanols support the synthesis of nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels and enhances blood flow, according to epidemiological and clinical studies.
However, dark chocolate has a high-calorie content, with an ounce having between 150 and 170 calories. Additionally, it has saturated fat, which could still have an impact on cholesterol levels. Fortunately, evidence from studies indicates that the advantages of flavanols still outweigh the risks of elevated cholesterol.
So, keep in mind that chocolate is a treat. To reap the most health benefits, consume it in moderation.
