For the undecided voter in your life, #6 in a series on the Referendum

“As both sides compete for your vote there’s so much to think about, and yet it doesn’t need to be overthought.”

From scrawny young doc to now, Recognition and Voice have shown themselves to me as key ingredients of good healthcare. What about the health of the nation?

“Now, it happens that another social movement wanting to heal people – and maybe a nation too – has found what I want to say in just two powerful words”

Thomas Mayo, a major figure in the Yes campaign has just called this “a compelling, heartfelt column that moved me, and I hope it will move other Australians. Keep telling your story.“

MDHers, it doesn’t get much better than that. I’d love to hear how this referendum is personal for you too.

“I long to feel connected to the land in the way I have heard First Nations people speak of, those with family trees with their roots down so deep it’s like the soil is in their skin, whether…

This! For parents in my practice struggling with how to make *all* the ends meet I use a Family Accounting Balance Sheet idea where the financial balance is only one of several columns. The others are time, energy, and goodwill. It helps people measure their household's ins and outs with a view to enough pleasure, purpose, fairness and sustainability each week.

Our treasurer is launching a national equivalent; I support this concept very much, as I'm interested in the similarities between running a household and running a country!

While the nation’s economic health is the traditional measure of success, Treasurer Jim Chalmers is poised to unveil a more rounded look at how we stack up.

Great brief intro to the work of A/Prof Alka Kothari, a champion of father-inclusive practice in the perinatal space. A PhD is no small undertaking, and she's emerged ready to make a difference to the experiences of dads and their families around pregnancy, whatever the outcome for mums and babies.

Associate Professor Alka Kothari is a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology and has helped thousands of women give birth over her 30-year career. She is a...

I have posted some notes I made for the slides I presented at this national webinar last week. It was such a good panel to be on, such an important topic, and I didn't get to make all the points I wanted to, so here are most of them! Any questions or feedback most welcome, always trying to get better at this...

It was a privilege indeed to be alongside these thoughtful, knowledgeable and caring communicators recently. Such an important topic, not easy at all, but so worthwhile. Thanks to Steve, Nicole, Bonnie, Eliza and the MHPN and JPL teams for making a heartfelt and grounding conversation come to life. Note: This video is designed for clinicians/professionals working with families experiencing perinatal loss and grief.

This webinar discusses the complex relationship between grief, loss, and mental health for bereaved parents. Panellists share their insights on the risk fact...

Hi MDHers, here is a resource my dear colleagues (and fellow convenors of Kew Perinatal MHPN) Robyn Ball and Lucy Bire have created for new and expecting parents. The e-book is free, and is worth more than so many of the parenting books you've paid for. There are also links to Circle of Security, a wonderful parenting programme, and Robyn's webinars supporting new parenthood of these tiny amazing humans whose experiences and abilities so often defy our expectations. Check it out:

Educating and inspiring parents in the first 1000 days in the art and science of raising resilient and emotionally secure people. Self Worth beyond Birth is a simple and powerful approach to parenting based on a mixture of Circle of Security, Attachment Parenting, New Born Observation, Neuroscience,...

'It’s time for a major overhaul in our collective understanding of what health looks like in our culture' - I don't know this author at all but this article is a good example of how bias makes us all less well as a society. A good read. https://www.theage.com.au/lifestyle/health-and-wellness/stop-telling-fat-people-their-bodies-are-costing-our-healthcare-system-20220805-p5b7nj.html

I’m a thin woman and I guarantee my body costs the health system more than people in fat bodies do.

If you're a perinatal mental health clinician in my FB network, this may be worth a click or two. Tonight, the Kew Perinatal MHPN has shifted its meeting online and is open to late registrants as we discuss a new national phone-based service for new parents in need and their helping professionals, called ForWhen. One of the service's Vic-based clinicians, Sarah Ferguson, will present on ForWhen and its role, then we will discuss how our work could be assisted by it. I'll include the direct link as a reply below. Hope to see you there!
