Final message from Anna Ridley, now that the Inkwell service has ended:

"I have spent the past 5 and a half years working at Inkwell, and in the last three years have had the pleasure of running the community outreach service. This has been the most enlightening, rewarding and wonderfully creative job and I will cherish all of the memories spent working with such inspiring people. Although it is easy to feel saddened and disheartened by the news of the service ending, I feel it's important to remember all of the amazing things we've accomplished over the years.

Thank you *so much* to my colleague Bev, who has been an invaluable part of this project, and to all our dedicated volunteers who have helped keep the groups afloat over the years. Most of all, thank you to every service user who attended any of our groups, for showing us how important art and creativity is to our mental health and well-being. Never stop expressing yourselves. 💙

For anyone who is struggling or looking for alternative art groups to join in the Leeds area, please see the blog post below for more information."

We are sad to announce that our Inkwell groups will stop running from 1st April due to a lack of funding.

There are many funding cuts in the city at the moment and unfortunately Inkwell is one of those that has been cut. From April 2024, the service will no longer be funded. At Leeds Mind we have gone to every length to try to secure replacement funding, but this has not been possible.

You can read more about why this has happened on our blog https://www.leedsmind.org.uk/inkwell-arts-service-ending/

We know this will have a huge impact on the people who use our service. The blog also includes local support, and alternative arts and crafts groups.

From 1st April, Leeds Mind’s Inkwell Arts groups will no longer be running in the community due to funding cut.

Yesterday we ran a memory candle making workshop at with . The idea behind the workshop was to provide a safe space for people to discuss bereavement in a creative environment, allowing them to take home something at the end of the workshop in remembrance of their loved ones. Thank you to for their generous hosting and to for their partnership in the project. 💙

Our Story

‘We believe individuals and communities flourish through creative practice and thought”

Inkwell is part of Leeds Mind, an independent charity whose aim is to enable individuals with mental health difficulties to flourish. We are a safe, creative and accessible space where passion and skills entwine, challenging the stigma of mental health and celebrating the diversity of its participants.

We took over the Old Shoulder of Mutton Pub in 2009 and refurbished the building with the vision of it remaining a community asset but with wellbeing and mental health at its core. Now, with over 500 people accessing our centre on a weekly basis we continue to build and maintain strong connections with the local community, also supporting vulnerable people from all over Leeds.

Using art and creativity as a tool to aid recovery from mental health difficulties and a therapeutic way to maintain wellbeing we provide a wide range of art and creative classes that take place throughout the week: some are on a referral basis while others are available for anyone to attend. Our services also extend into the evenings and weekends with monthly social events happening such as our Secret Cinema or the Instrumental accoustic evening. We also host weekend art and craft classes for all ages and our Saturday Cafe service which provides a safe community space to create, interact and harness your potential whilst enjoying nutrtious and delicious vegetarian food, homemade cakes and freshly brewed coffee.
