Many things can happen on the table: clients can be silent, chatty, fall asleep, some dissociate, and leave their bodies.

Dissociation happens organically, when "I’ve hit overwhelm and then I've left."

Anything we do organically is an act of God.

It’s a natural response.

Activation is also nothingness. When a client has no response, it's always best to note that, more than likely, they are in a freeze or protective state.

A highly activated person can also swing into a very quiet state.

Think of a possum and their reaction.

Always remember...the Transforming Touch® Practitioner is the threat during the beginning stages of treatment. Sometimes for an extended period. It takes time to create Somatic Trust. They will tell you over and over that they trust you, but usually not the body in agreement.

When we have Developmental Trauma, it is not unusual that approximately 70% of our information comes from our brain, with about 30% from our body. This is the opposite of how it actually works without all our defensive accommodations.

Part of healing is understanding that our client will move from the high brain to the body, so 70% from the body and 30% from the brain. This transition also causes the client to feel more activation."

Transforming Touch® facilitates the release of trauma held in the body; this release can be accompanied by defensive accommodations, like smiling or laughing while in session.

Smiling and laughing are also linked to feeling good, a stronger immune system, and can lower stress on the body.

As practitioners, we understand that 2 things can be true at the same time.

Spring is a wonderful time to reflect on, change is occurring even if we don't see it.
Healing is occurring, even when you can't see it.

Somatic Experience Practitioner Trainings

Transforming the Experience-Based Brain®: An Integrative Neurodevelopmental Approach for the Treatment of Developmental Trauma using Transforming Touch®. Stephen J Terrell PsyD, SEP. Three 5 Day Modules. Transforming Touch® is a protocol of applying touch to support regulation of the client's autonomic nervous system. As the ANS regulates it allows space for the client's body to repair early developmental ruptures. Transforming Touch® combines gentle touch, Therapeutic Centering, understanding Polyvagal Theory with early trauma, Primitive Reflex evaluation, and repair, using the language of repair with survival parts, Treatment Enhancements, and a clear path for following the protocol. You do not need prior experience with Touch to attend this training, just a desire to work with clients who have a history of Developmental Trauma. Developed by Terrell who is co-author of Nurturing Resilience. Learning is through a combination of lecture and experiential exercises. Open to Psychologists, Psychotherapists, Body Workers, Social Workers, and other healing modalities. CEU's available including Body Worker hours.
