Dust Mite Allergy - Hong Kong House dust mite is the commonest indoor allergen found in HK and SE Asia.

Mite may not be the only trigger of allergy, but as a major cause of chronic wheezing, itching, and sneezing , it is the prime suspect, especially for children. With a common bias towards drugs to treat allergic diseases such as asthma, rhinitis, and

dermatitis, they can be caused and exacerbated by exposure to house dust mites. Although there are about 300 species of mites recorded around the world, four different types of house dust mite are recognized as the major cause of allergic disease in HK and SE Asia. They live on discarded skin scales found in damp, dark, warm places resembling a common environment of our bedrooms. These mites produce a digestive enzyme, remaining in their droppings that can damage or kill living cells when they are exposed to them. (1) Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (屋塵蟎)
(2) Dermatophagoides farinae (粉塵蟎)
(3) Blomia tropicalis (熱帶無爪蟎)
(4) Lepidoglyphus destructor (害鳞嗜蟎)

(c) Testing for allergy to house dust mites
