A new California bill is focused on improving health access for rural farmworkers.

The Rural Farmworker Women’s Health Act would provide free menstrual products to women working in remote agricultural areas. The program would partner with local nonprofits to distribute supplies where access is limited.

Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital has closed its inpatient pediatric unit, removing the only full-time pediatric ward between the North Bay and the Oregon border.

The closure raises serious concerns about access to care for children in rural communities who may now face longer travel times for treatment.

Dear Colleagues and Partners,

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to each of you for your participation in this year’s California State Rural Health Association Annual Conference. Your presence, engagement, and commitment helped make this gathering not only successful but truly impactful.

Over the course of the day, we experienced meaningful dialogue, thoughtful collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose that reflects the best of our rural health community. The level of engagement in sessions, panels, and networking opportunities was inspiring and a clear testament to the passion and dedication each of you brings to advancing rural health across California.

California is making a major investment in behavioral health and rural communities are finally seeing direct funding.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced $1.18 billion in Proposition 1 awards to support 66 projects across 130 facilities. For the first time, funding is reaching small counties and tribal communities that have historically been left out.

The projects will expand access to treatment, add thousands of residential beds and outpatient slots, and serve millions of Californians each year.

Real progress happens in conversations like these.

Rural health advances when people share what they are seeing, name what is getting in the way, and build solutions together. That is the power of convening, and it is why CSRHA brings this community together.

Thank you for contributing your voice and your experience at . Let’s keep the momentum going in our organizations, in our regions, and across California.

As we reflect on the Annual Conference, a few insights kept surfacing in conversations across the day.

5️⃣ insights we’re carrying forward:

1. Rural innovation is already happening, even when resources are uncertain.

2. Partnerships are how solutions scale, across regions and across sectors.

3. Workforce and capacity pressures are real, and rural strategies must match rural realities.

4. Access is more than a service line, it is transportation, broadband, trust, and local context.

5. Advocacy matters, especially when funding shifts and decisions are made far from rural communities.

For many rural Californians, getting healthcare is not just about finding a provider. It is about how far they must travel to reach one.

New data shows distance has become one of the biggest barriers to care in rural communities. Patients often drive long distances for basic services, which can delay treatment and worsen health outcomes.

Improving rural healthcare access means addressing transportation, expanding local clinics, and supporting telehealth solutions.

That's a wrap on .

What a day. National policy updates, the Rural Health Transformation Program, rural libraries as community health partners, aging policy, HIPAA. Packed from opening remarks to the reception.

If you were in the room, we want to know: what's still on your mind? The session that changed how you're thinking about something, the conversation at lunch that went longer than it should have, the stat that you're going to quote for the next six months.

Drop it in the comments. Rural health is better when we share what we're learning.

See you next year. 🌾
