Andre is graduating today with BETTER than perfect vision! Most people think 20/20 is perfect but Andre is actually 20/15! Now that Gene Hackman has passed, I can reveal a story about him & my dad, K York Chynn, MD, MS. In 1973, my dad published a paper about “painless myelography” based on 541 consecutive patients whom he treated. This was published in Radiology, & about 20 years ago, I helped my dad donate $100,000 to RSNA to endow a research award in perpetuity😇In the 1970s, before CT or MRI, radiologists needed to inject radio-opaque dye into the spinal column to provide better visualization. But myelograms were notoriously painful. My dad eventually patented the “Chynn myelography needle” that was sold by Beckton Dickinson, which featured a novel side injection port. By 1979, my dad was renowned for being able to perform “painless myelography” so Gene Hackman flew into NYC just to see him. My dad said Gene was exceedingly scared, but after his painless procedure, also exceedingly grateful. His recent passing brought up memories of another great man, my dad, who was my inspiration to become a surgeon (my dad’s 1st residency). My favorite Hackman film was “Unforgiven” for which he won Best Supporting Actor. This music is from that film & is called “Claudia’s Theme”. I’ve watched “Unforgiven” over a dozen times—it’s one of my favorite films 🎥
