Every Rare Voice Matters.

I had the privilege of speaking during a congressional hearing in Washington, DC—sharing my journey of living with multiple myeloma and representing the voices of so many living with rare diseases.

Our stories reflect strength, setbacks, and the ongoing fight for awareness, equity, and access in healthcare. My story is just one among many powerful narratives featured in the Rare Disease Diversity Coalition’s patient story series.

I invite you to watch and listen. Together, we can rise for rare.

Had the honor of being part of an amazing cultural collaboration between organizations at the African American Men's Wellness Day in Philly. A huge shoutout to Dymiere Finch and his team at AAMWA for bringing me into this important event! 💯

What made the day even more impactful was seeing all the overlapping relationships and how we maximized the potential for change. Big thanks to the Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine team—Duane Reid, MDiv, and London Wills, PhD, MBA—for allowing me to represent their My Health Can't Wait (MHCW) Campaign 💪🏽.

The event was filled with love, energy, and health—from on-site screenings to the 5K walk to inspiring speakers like Philadelphia Freeway and JaBaris Swain, heart surgeon at J&J 🫶🏽. A special shoutout to Shanti Das for moderating amazing conversations on her platform "Lived Experiences." 🎤

A personal highlight for me was meeting up with Richard Armstrong, his mom, and his sister. Rich and I are Support Group Leaders for the International Myeloma Foundation, and it meant a lot to have them in the building 💯. Huge thanks to my brother .57 for joining me on the Hip Hope Hooray! Black Men Talking Health podcast 🎙️.

The most beautiful part of the day was seeing so many women show up in support 🙏🏽. The energy in that room was incredible, and it showed how much love there is in the community. Excited for the future collaborations and the positive impact we will continue to make together! 🙌🏽💥

I must say, it’s hard to fully express my gratitude for the opportunity to present the Health, Hope & Hip-Hop Foundation’s first abstract submission at the 25th International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) World Conference on Health Promotion in Abu Dhabi. 🙏🏾🔥

Our abstract, "The Power of Hip-Hop: Revolutionizing Planetary Health and Well-Being," was part of the Alternative Technology session, where we got to show how we’re bringing innovation to health promotion. 💡

Co-author, Angela Valentine, couldn’t make the trip in person but was instrumental in the creation of the abstract and entire journey🙌🏾💻

This experience was beyond my wildest dreams! Met some dope people, formed new connections, and built real friendships. 🌍💯 Got to learn about different cultures and the unique health challenges people face globally—so eye-opening! 👀

Big shoutout to all the amazing delagates I met and for the powerful convos we had! 🔥 We are looking forward to what we can accomplish together to make a real impact on planetary health. 🙏🏾💪🏾

From E-Way to UAE...God is Great, let’s change the future. 🌟

As a patient advocate and multiple myeloma survivor, I will never stop advocating for others especially the underrepresented! Today I’m sharing my cancer journey and the Health, Hope & Hip-Hop Foundation’s work with Pfizer’s global commercial oncology community. This engagement coincided with Myeloma Action Month in March and this month Minority Health Awareness Month. Stay tune, more to come…I got something brewing!!!

🎤 From the Block to the Boardroom: A Full Circle Moment 🎤

When Young Guru took the stage at the Hip Hope Ball, he shared a story that hit home. Growing up in Wilmington, DE, he was mentored by Jay, Joey, and Shant Money, three DJs who inspired his love for music. At 15, seeing someone who looked like him on an album cover gave him the confidence to dream big.

Now, Guru serves on the advisory board of the Health, Hope & Hip-Hop Foundation, dedicated to addressing healthcare disparities in Black communities. It’s about community, culture, and representation.

Guru also reflected on the influence of our founder, Oya Gilbert. Oya’s impact went beyond money—it was about support, vision, and changing lives. As Guru said, “When Oya called, I was down before he even said anything.”

Let’s continue pushing forward, bridging hip-hop and healthcare, and ensuring every community has the resources and representation it needs to thrive. 🌍✨

🎉 We are thrilled to share that April Johnson from DETV placed the winning bid on the incredible DMX portrait painted by the talented Kwamel Dean, aka Melly Mel, during our silent auction at the Hip Hope Ball! 🎨 This artwork not only celebrates the life and legacy of our beloved hip-hop icon, DMX (Earl Simmons), who was born on December 18, 1970, and passed away on April 9, 2021, but also showcases the amazing creative talent within our community. 🕊️

DMX’s life and music were deeply intertwined with his struggles with mental health and addiction. He openly discussed his battle with bipolar disorder and the challenges he faced with addiction, issues that began when he was introduced to crack co***ne at the age of 14. His candor about these struggles brought much-needed awareness to mental health issues within the hip-hop community and helped to normalize conversations around them. 💪🏽

We had the honor of having Kwamel present the piece personally to April, marking a truly special moment. Thank you, April, for your support! 🙏🏽

But that’s not all—starting this Friday, we will be auctioning off the last two stunning portraits! Stay tuned for more details on how you can participate and support our mission to honor those we’ve lost too soon to health-related issues while promoting art and hope. 🌟

Let’s keep the momentum going! 💙
