Hobbies for Seniors- Why they are so important?
As we age, it is so critical to maintain an active and more importantly, an engaged lifestyle! Hobbies are an excellent way to help with that! They provide fulfillment and improve our quality of life!
Engaging in hobbies benefits us in more ways than one! They improve our cognitive health, our emotional health, our physical health, as well as promoting social stimulation!
Hobbies improve our cognitive health by increasing mental stimulation and challenging our brains! If you start a new hobby, that can even generate new brain cells, improving memory and reducing risks for all types of Dementia, such as Alzheimer’s Disease. Lifelong learning keeps our brains active.
Having a hobby also improves our overall emotional health by bringing joy, allowing self-expression, as well as reduce daily stress! By having something to look forward to each day, there can be less episodes of depression and loneliness. By doing hobbies that encourage self-expression and creativity, it can boost confidence levels as well! Hobbies can improve our mood and overall sense of wellbeing because they release endorphins which are the body’s natural feel-good chemicals.
Hobbies that involve physical movement, such as gardening, walking, or dancing, which can help maintain physical health, improve mobility, and reduce the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease or arthritis. Moving our bodies every day also improves sleep and digestion! Medical studies show that daily exercise reduces the level of Sun Downers for those with Alzheimer’s Disease!
What are some great hobbies for older adults? The possibilities are endless! Painting, writing, drawing, crafting, gardening, walking, seated exercise classes at the community center, hiking, dancing, book clubs, volunteering, game nights, puzzles, playing music, researching family history, doing puzzles, photography, or even taking online classes!
It is never too late to start a new hobby or to revisit an old favorite to improve your life and provide fulfillment and create self worth!
