It's like a gold mine has been sitting underneath us for decades. It turns out that there is a likelihood that the neuro-protective action of lithium may re**rd the onset and progression of Alzheimer's disease. Though not ready quite yet for prime time, patients on long term use of Lithium for psychiatric reasons can feel some comfort that they may be getting biological benefit, and we may be soon hearing recommendations that the general population might benefit form low dose exposure.

One of our patients told us that 'trauma bonding' is trending on social media and we wanted to dig down and think through the issues. See our blog article to see what we came up with:

Nature magazine had a recent article on the uncovering of very specific brain circuits that are related to dyscontrol of drinking behavior. The scientists call these circuits 'neuronal assemblies' and remarkably different assemblies seem responsible for loss of control of different drugs; co***ne abuse being modulated in a different way than alcohol abuse. The image below is of a little mouse in a 'DID' paradigm. Mice are nocturnal so 'drinking in the dark' habits can be assessed by infusing sweetened water with alcohol and looking at the genetic patterns of mice that are associated with liking or being averse to alcohol. Such science is hopeful in that down the road we may be able to genetically test young people, perhaps even pre-adolescents, and begin education and intervention before things get out of control; biology is not destiny, but it is vulnerability. If you or a loved on has a drinking problem, we are here to help.

Being that the wall between mind and body is porous, taking care of mental health involves respecting physical health- the reverse is also true. The cute little video that follows may help some begin to think about processed foods:

Why don’t Cheetos taste like cheese? As part of The Times’s January Challenge, Well columnist Jancee Dunn and flavor scientist Dr. Arielle Johnson investigate why ultraprocessed foods differ so much from their whole food counterparts — and why they can be addictive.

A brief nap can add zap to your day if done right, so learn to nap like a cat:

Experts say a midday rest is great for your health. Here’s how to get the most out of it.

I have to s***k myself for not showing off our office. The little building was originally set up as a residence. We had the place gutted and reconfigured to be what we felt would be an ideal place for psychiatry and psychotherapy. A picture is worth a thousand words. One word I would add is that our space represents the warm and supportive environment that we clinicians at Wellness strive for. Follow the link to see more pics.
