Today I got to attend an inclusion assembly at M. Scott Carpenter Elementary School with special guest speaker, Tim Rohrer.
Tim is a young adult with autism and gave the most powerful presentation. Besides putting together the most thoughtfully worded video about kindness and how to show up for all-abled people, I took more home from this.
Tim did not speak until he was four years old. He could not form full sentences until third grade, and didn’t know he was autistic until he was a little bit older.
Yet today, at 25 years old, he not only has authored a book, but he’s toured schools like ours and spoken in front of large groups of people to share his message.
I couldn’t do that until my 40’s and I told him just how amazing he truly is. I’m certain he inspired everyone to get up and share today.
I loved that so many children raised their hands to ask him questions, that he answered each one so perfectly, but even more that children walked up to demand respect and kindness on the mic too.
Thank you, Mr. Sullivan for arranging this, and Principal McCue for inviting me, and for giving me a school tour while visiting.
Tim is on many social platforms, and I’m sharing them in this post.
Thank you for reminding us all how to show up and look out for each other in the world!

About 3 1/2 years ago I visited the Carpenter School, and they said it was one of the best assemblies they ever had. Today I got to return there to meet a new group of students for kindness week to talk about kindness and inclusion! Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring this assembly and giving me such a warm welcome!

Today I returned for a second year to the The CALM Academy to to talk about acceptance & inclusion. They were a great group of engaging children. This is the first time I went to a school without my mom and the staff was so welcoming. Thanks for having me back this year!

How to be a good Influence to people with disabilities

I am a young adult with autism who struggled to fit in with my peers during high school. After I graduated, I decided to write a guide to teach kids how to act socially with those who have disabilities. My guide was published by the NJ Coalition of Inclusive Education and became widely circulated on social media by organizations such as Autism Speaks and Autism NJ. It became viral when the Asbury Park Press released an article that includes a video about me.
