I had a great time in Roseburg this week teaching my workshop "No Need to Squirm: Talking with our kids with disabilities about sexual health and wellness." It was a small group, but that gave us a chance to make it more personal and get folks the resources they needed. A big thank you to FEATT !

First and foremost, the CAC is an advisory council that gives feedback to the Center on Human Development and its various programs. A tour like this is a learning experience for CAC members, but it's also a chance for the lab to benefit from what members share about their lived experience. Elevating people's voices is something I love about this part of my work. After our visit, Lyndsay expressed her gratitude for the CAC's input. It prompted her to finalize a goal to reach out to adult audiology providers and teach them how to work with adults with developmental disabilities.

People often justify their use of the R-word by saying they “didn’t mean it that way.” There is no other way to mean it. The word is a slur. Period. When I hear it, I interrupt immediately with a “whoa whoa whoa” tone of voice and say something like, “Sure (to whatever they’re griping about), but let’s find another word, OK?” If they don’t catch themselves right away, I say, “I know you didn’t mean it this way, but everyone I know with intellectual disabilities is really hurt by that word.” It’s rare I get push-back. People usually apologize. For the person who really doesn’t get it and says, “Those people aren’t here right now,” the response is “but I am.”

🏃‍♀️Movement is one of our most effective tools for wellness. Walking, stretching, rocking, jumping aren't just distractions from challenging moments; they're a pathway to self-regulation. Moving the body helps release built-up stress, organize sensory input, and create a sense of safety.

📖I recently listened to this book about exercise and the brain, and it made me want to find more ways to help my clients manage their anxiety and dysregulation with preventative exercise. It's a great read! And she explains how the brain tries to stop us from exercising and how to overcome that. Move the Body Heal the Mind by Jennifer Heisz available through the Eugene Public Library's Libby app.

When I write a plan, my favorite part is training my client’s support team. I’ve gotten to do this a lot lately with some stellar people who are truly dedicated to the wellbeing and dignity of the person they support. The best part is that it’s so collaborative. Everyone learns from each other. I leave knowing the plan is the best it can be based on what we know works for the person at the center of it. Thank you to all the DSPs, PSWs, parents, siblings, grandparents, job developers, job coaches, rep payees, counselors, and friends who put their hearts and minds into designing high quality support! And thank you to all my clients who work tirelessly to help us understand what you need. 💙
