This is so exciting! Judy was such a big picture thinker, but her messages were always personal too. Can't wait to see this movie!

“Being Heumann” is an upcoming movie from Apple Original Films based on the best-selling memoir of Judith Heumann. Heumann, also known as the “Mother of the Disability Rights Movement”, will be played by actress Ruth Madely. Other cast members include Mark Ruffalo, Daniel Durant, and Jon Beavers. The film will be directed by “CODA” Oscar-winner Sian Heder. Last year I had the privilege of doing outreach for a research project that focused on the mental health of youth with intellectual disabilities. Much like with women and heart disease or any other population that gets left out of research and then gets lumped in with the majority focus population, youth with IDD deserve support designed for them that acknowledges their unique needs. We don't need specialized therapists, but we do need all therapists to be well trained to differentiate their treatment plans according to the individual's needs - and for those therapists not to be scared off by disability. This type of research is paying off. We now understand the importance of using a biological understanding of behavior when it comes to every person we support (including ourselves!). Conferences like this help educate providers to be better equipped to serve everyone and help families be more effective advocates. Youth IDD Mental Health Summit, August 6th at OSU.

I got to hang out with lots of people at the annual Full Access picnic. It was a great turnout! Most were clients, so no pix, but here I am with my CAC colleague, Rusty, and Full Access Personal Agent, Sam. So many fun activities! I can never get over how clever this game "machine" is. Everyone had such a good time. When the support services brokerages like Full Access were established after Oregon finally closed its institutions for people with developmental disabilities, it not only became possible for people to live, work, and play in their communities, but we also got these amazing non-profits providing case management that became hubs for connection. Full Access has been a leader since the beginning, and I'm so grateful we have them!

The highlight of the Self Advocates Convention for me, other than seeing all our people, was Alva Gardner's keynote address. She had a take on some person-centered thinking tools that I am definitely going to use! Thanks to the CAC for getting me there! And thanks to The Arc Oregon for making it happen!

This convention felt like a reward at the end of a long advocacy season! And we'll keep going!

The CAC and I worked hard this year to educate ourselves and advocate for accessible housing in Oregon. Here's a slide from one of our trainings. Now the federal government has proposed a rule to rescind regulations that require accessibility in new construction. These regulations have been in place since 1973 when Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act went into effect. If you are inclined to speak up, you can comment here. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/05/16/2025-08535/rescinding-new-construction-requirements-related-to-nondiscrimination-in-federally-assisted-programs -comment

I talk about using visuals for cognitive and emotional support every day! This was a new one I hadn't seen before today (a mat of traced hands to rest your hands on for a manicure). Love it!

Flight rehearsal at PDX June 8th at 9:00. Last time we flew, our TSA Cares agent (at another airport), Eddie, gave us a sticker of himself as a caricature. He was so proud of his work! Locally and federally administered programs like these are key for equal access to travel. Every time you use them, make sure to fill out the survey they give you to let them know how vital these services are. Get your TSA Cares card online. Thank you, for all your innovative support!

At , we believe travel should feel welcoming—for everyone. That’s why we’re teaming up with the Autism Society of Oregon - A*O, Transportation Security Administration - TSA, and Icelandair to host a special experience for travelers with disabilities and their families.

From our sensory room and sunflower lanyards to thoughtful wayfinding and extra support at security, we’re proud to offer accessibility features that help ease the journey. This event gives families a chance to explore the airport at their own pace—practicing check-in, navigating security, and even boarding a plane (no flying required).

There’ll be helpful volunteers, a fun scavenger hunt, and plenty of little PDX touches along the way.

We’re always working to make PDX a place where everyone can feel confident and cared for—this is just one way we do that.
