My last post about rural week!

It wasn’t ALL fun and games…they did have to learn a little bit while they were here too!

Each of our wonderful medical students: Leo McKay, Darshan Patel and Xiao Zhang were able to experience different aspects of rural health care - in the medical clinic, in the emergency room and the long term care setting. They rotated with each of our three providers - Dr. Pujol, Dr. Salimarouny, and Brittany Vrooman, to get a glimpse of what a rural practice could look like. From their feedback we could tell it was not as they expected. I think they were pleasantly surprised.

It truly was a wonderful week and we were honoured to have the students join our community and see how wonderful it is to live in Glenboro!

On the very last day, the students did send a message indicating what a wonderful community we have, and that they loved meeting everybody and being able to experience the things that rural life has to offer. They said they truly enjoyed the experience and it has opened their mind to rural medicine !

So that tells us the week was successful!

The students had to do a picture collage for school (see the picture below) and they titled it
“Camels weren’t here before, neither were we!”

Thanks again to the students for coming to our smalll town, our practitioners for using their time to teach them and for everybody in the community who helped to make this week successful! We look forward to hosting new students next year!

For our last evening with the medical students, Chad Berry was kind enough to pick up the students from the clinic to give them a farm tour! They had never been around a tractor before and Chad even let them try their hand at driving!! Apparently they all did great at driving… natural farmers! A tour of the potato shed was also provided. They had a lot of great questions about agriculture and how we grow food - so Chad was definitely the man to answer their questions. So thank you Chad with Under The Hill Farms for participating in our activities this week!

We had supper at the ball diamond where we had a barbeque with some homemade salads which Pam Sawatzky prepared. They were delicious! And since we were at the ball diamond, we had to give them the opportunity to swing at a softball. And I must admit they did pretty good!! Thanks to Anna and Corey Forbes for entertaining us and interrupting their practice time to allow this activity to happen.

Next stop was Hamco Cattle Co! You can’t come to a rural community and not check out the cattle! Larissa was great at explaining how things were run on their farm, including the breeding process, how they transport their bulls all around Manitoba that were sold in their annual bull sale, and she even let the students walk a baby calf! She was very knowledgeable and the tour was enlightening and fun! Thank you Larissa for your time !

And that was almost the end of our evening, but when we returned to the ball diamond, there just happened to be a U13 ball game on. So of course we had to stop and cheer on the home team!

Wednesday May 28 Our fabulous medical students Leo McKay, Darshan Patel and Xiao Zhang spent some more time at the clinic in the morning assessing patients.

It was Track n Field day so they went with Brittany Vrooman to be available for any minor injuries that may have occurred during the days events. They were impressed with how many spectators attended the event, and mentioned that they met the principal while he was flipping burgers for the athletes.

That evening Marla McGregor whipped up a fabulous meal down at Pine Fort for all of us.
Following supper we went on two hikes. The first one was in the campground - Isputinaw and then we hiked Steels Ferry (once we finally located it!). Following this we headed to Marsh’s Lake to see if we could see the turtles on the log. They unfortunately were not there.

Another great day of rural living.

Tuesday, May 27 was a night for the medical students Leo McKay, Darshan Patel and Xiao Zhang to have an activity with the Prairie Mountain Health team. We planned a wagon ride at the Sand Dunes with Larry Robinson Spirit Sands Wagon Outfitters. How could they not be impressed with the dunes and punch bowl!!
They all had supper at the Spruce Woods Inn at Glenboro afterwards. Students that were participating in rural week in Carberry and Neepawa also joined the activity.

Last week we welcomed three medical students from the University of Manitoba, who just completed their first year of studies. They participated in rural week to get a feel of what rural medicine was like.

Leo McKay, Darshan Patel and Xiao Zhang were a pleasure to have in our community for the week. They were up for anything and had positive attitudes about all the things we had planned for them.

Monday, May 26 after their clinic day, we planned a pizza supper for them, Dr. Pujol, Dr. Salimarouny, Brittany Vrooman (NP) and three health action committee members at the firehall. After supper they had a chance to talk with the EMS staff while checking out the fire trucks and ambulance.

Later that evening, The Health Action Committee planned a Movie Night for all the staff at the Glenboro Health Centre. “The Accountant 2”. We had 18 people take part in this activity, including the students. Free movie, popcorn and a drink! We then delivered popcorn to the night staff!

It was a wonderful evening!

Please join us tonight at the Glenboro Theatre in appreciation of our Health Centre workers!! Free admission and popcorn for all the health centre workers!

We encourage ALL community members to attend for this showing of the movie. We have three medical students participating in rural placements in Glenboro this week, so we would like to have a great turnout to show them what small town living is all about!! Please make time to watch the movie with us tonight!

See you at the movies!!!
