👉TRIGGER WARNING: Fetal Scalp Monitoring👈

Parents are often surprised to find out that the monitor that was attached to their baby's head during labour wasn't just a "clip," as it was referred to, or a sticker, but instead a metal screw that went into the scalp. There may be times when parents want to make the choice to use a fetal scalp electrode to monitor their baby's heartrate, HOWEVER as is the case with anything, this intervention needs to be explained in detail to parents along with the risks and benefits.

Here's a link from AIMS that talks through various fetal monitoring in labour https://www.aims.org.uk/information/item/monitoring-your-babys-heartbeat-in-labour

Once again, things like fetal scalp monitoring *can* impact the baby's head and their head movement when breastfeeding, not to mention that it often leads to further interventions in labour that can further impact the baby's abilities to breastfeed comfortably.

Image Description: background is block colours and an image of a fetal scalp electrode monitor with text overlay, "Stop calling it a clip, it's a screw! A Fetal Scalp Electrode Can be screwed into your baby's head to monitor your baby's heartrate during labour. It's meant to help determine whether your baby is under any stress while you labour. stress???..."

It’s science: Women need time to birth—so doctors shouldn’t rush labor + delivery

Time to birth, continuity of care and support 💜
https://www.mother.ly/news/its-science-we-shouldnt-rush-the-birth-process

When writing birth plans, most expectant mothers don’t anticipate they will need interventions during delivery—which includes everything from hormonal induction of labor to the use of forceps to a C-section. Yet current rates for cesarean births in the United States hover around 32%, more than 2...

Birth doulas are increasing in popularity to support families at the birth of their babies, but why do people feel they need more support than what the medical system offers?

of . • Still going .
• Still breastfeeding to sleep. • Still waking up at night countless times.
Breastfeeding is not just food, it's , it's , it's , it's supplying your baby with antibodies and whatever nutrients she/he needs. °As your baby gets older, the composition of your breast milk will continue to change to meet his or her nutritional needs. There's no known age at which breast milk is considered to become nutritionally insignificant for a child. °Research suggests that the longer breast-feeding continues and the more breast milk a baby drinks, the better his or her health might be. °Breast-feeding beyond infancy — as well as breast-feeding for 12 months or more cumulatively in life — has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.
( Datas from https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/infant-and-toddler-health/in-depth/extended-breastfeeding/art-20046962 )

I breastfed my other 2 kids until 18-20 months, and stopped because I was pregnant and my breast become extremely sensitive and I wasn't enjoying breastfeeding anymore as it was painful. I truly believe that breastfeeding is a shared moment of joy and love, both mum and baby need to enjoy the moment. If one of them doesn't, first you need to understand if it's just once off or if it's a repeated feeling, then take consequences based on the needs.

How long have you breastfed for? Did you mix feeding? Did you give him/her firmula? Did you express? ~Whatever path you choose, you fed your baby and did whatever worked for you!~ breastfeeding recommendations : if mum or baby are affected by the , it is still strongly recommended you keep breastfeeding your baby. Your milk will keep proving nutrients and antibodies, abd you can keep enjoying the cuddles unless you have to be separated for more serious medical reasons.

It's really hard to change a cultural problem when due to the they are changing to the worse how babies are .
Admitting only 1 support person to the birth ward is declining to the birthing person the right to have the trusted people she wants around during this important moment, it is refusing to admit that a can make things better only by being there, not mentioning the work that she has done with the family in the months leading to welcoming the baby. I understand it's an unprecedented situation, but denying the right to choose is like denying the freedom.

You are in charge on your labour, birth, body and baby!

It’s always discouraging to me when I see moms who don’t know that they are in charge in the delivery room.

Recently I saw an expecting mom ask in a Facebook group if she would be allowed to get on her hands and knees in the hospital bed.

Mama! Do what you want.

We spend so much time researching everything. The best car seat to buy, the best crib on the market, the best baby body wash.

Birth impacts you on not only a physical level, but an emotional and mental level too.

Spend the time to learn what your body and mind need during birth.

Research things like laboring positions, eating and drinking during labor, intermittent monitoring, VBAC’s, breech babies, pitocin, etc.

Find a provider you trust, one who practices informed consent and respects you.

Everyone’s birth experience is unique, I can’t tell you what your exact situation will be or what you will need in the delivery room. But you have an opportunity during the nine months of pregnancy to prepare.

Don’t waste it!

Here are a few simple examples of your rights during pregnancy and birth.

Breastfeeding is like running a , started without training, and no sign of the finish line in sight. It requires a support crew, that is constantly cheering you up, passing you plenty of water and food to keep you going, whispering words of encouragement, covering you with a blanket or un umbrella and never giving you unsolicited advice. While is natural, it requires from both sides, time to and fail and for those bad days. And mostly, once established, none has ever to be asked when they’ll stop. My body, my baby, my decision! https://blog.latchedmama.com/2019/12/27/can-we-please-stop-asking-moms-when-theyll-be-done-breastfeeding/

A is the continuity of care during . It’s the gap filler. A woman supported by a doula is less likely to have medication.... as the doula can suggest a huge variety of comfort measures... and is less likely to have a c- section. 1 in 3 birthing women in Australia experience a birth trauma. A doula can definitely help to avoid that. It’s a knowledgeable, physical and mental support. When you know your rights, you feel empowered to take informed decisions, even if it’s a differ path from what you thought to have. Knowledge is power, so hire a doula!

🎓 Let’s talk about hormones
Oxytocin is the love hormone, it’s produced every time we feel joy and happy, everyone can produce it, even men and children. Its pick is just after birth, to help us bonding with our new baby and to shrink our uterus, during stage 3 of labour while the placenta detach and leave our body, to avoid we loose too much blood. Can you imagine how much oxytocin is produced while we are holding our babies, carrying them around, kissing and hugging, and breastfeeding them all they long? There is no such thing as spoiling a newborn, holding him/her for too long, over feeding or over cuddling! But ... the life of a newborn mother can be overwhelming. Days pass by, doing exactly the same few things, on repeat mode. Oxytocin can help to cope better with boredom, but still, a new mother NEEDS support. Psychological, physical and knowledgeable support. That’s when a steps in. The help is there mostly for her, to debrief, explain, listen, and most importantly, just being there. She can hold the baby to relieve the Mum for a couple of hours, so she can rest, eat, shower, going outside, sit alone at a cafe or hairdresser, while she knows that her baby has been very well looked after. She can finally relax. And that’s when her oxytocin can kick in too, as she feels happy and looked after, and it makes her full of new energies to look after her baby again. Usually don’t have much help around, and a postpartum doula, or mother’s help, is just what you need. To relax, recharge and restart. Get in touch to know more about the and role, and what my packages and fees are.

📢 BREASTFEEDING DOES NOT MAKE YOUR BREASTS SAG📢

This is a flat out myth and we need to stop telling mothers that breastfeeding will sag their breasts. This myth alone has stopped many many mothers from breastfeeding out of the sheer fear of having saggy breasts.

So what does make your breasts sag?

📢WHETHER YOU BREASTFEED OR NOT, PREGNANCY ALONE COULD MAKE YOUR BREASTS SAG📢

➖Ligaments, called Cooper’s ligaments, support your breasts. These ligaments are made up of elastin and collagen and it breaks down as you age, causing sag. When you are pregnant, your breasts become fuller and heavier, and continue to do so as the pregnancy progresses. It makes the ligaments stretch and eventually makes your breasts sag. The change will be more noticeable if you have fuller breasts. Multiple pregnancies too can result in a dramatic change in your bust. Not to mention that during pregnancy our bodies release the hormone Relaxin that keeps ligaments loose to accommodate pregnancy. Those ligaments holding your breasts become looser thus sagging the breasts. Did I mention high impact exercises cause more sagging? Wear a good supportive sports bra during these activities!

How to help prevent saggy breasts after pregnancy:
✅wear a supportive sports bra that gives good support to your breasts and make sure you are wearing the right size
✅eat healthy
✅get some exercise(especially chest exercises to strengthen the ligaments in breasts)
✅moisturize your breasts
✅lose weight slowly

Breastfeeding is hard enough, and we need to be encouraging of mothers and babies instead of spreading false information.

♥️AND BESIDES, SAGGY BREASTS WILL NOT BE THE DEATH OF YOU♥️

✨💕 Skin to Skin 💕✨

There is a growing body of evidence that skin-to-skin contact after the birth helps babies and their mothers in many ways.

* Calms and relaxes both mother and baby
* Regulates the baby’s heart rate and breathing, helping them to better adapt to life outside the womb
* Stimulates digestion and an interest in feeding
* Regulates temperature
* Enables colonisation of the baby’s skin with the mother’s friendly bacteria, thus providing protection against infection
* Stimulates the release of hormones to support breastfeeding and mothering.

Additional benefits for babies in the neonatal unit -

* Improves oxygen saturation
* Reduces cortisol (stress) levels particularly following painful procedures
* Encourages pre-feeding behaviour
* Assists with growth
* May reduce hospital stay
* If the mother expresses following a period of skin-to-skin contact, her milk volume will improve and the milk expressed will contain the most up-to-date antibodies.
