Before I discovered coaching—which completely transformed my life—something magical happened that started with a community: The JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes (now Breakthrough T1D). I’m sharing this story because community is something everyone can access, including you.
Thirteen years ago, I joined my dad for the Ride to Cure Diabetes. At the time, I wasn’t thrilled. I felt stuck in negativity and frustration with T1D. I agreed mainly because my dad asked; it was a chance to spend time with him.
But that event changed everything. Achieving a biking goal and being surrounded by people who truly understood T1D was transformative. I leaned into the community for the first time instead of pulling away. It planted a seed of hope that things could feel different.
As I prepare for my 12th Ride to Cure Diabetes this weekend, I’m reflecting on how pivotal that first ride was. It didn’t fix everything overnight, but it opened the door to connection, growth, and, eventually, the work I do today.
Community matters. Whether it’s people who share your experiences, those who’ve faced similar challenges, or someone willing to listen, finding a connection can be a powerful first step—especially if you’re stuck or overwhelmed.
Here are a few ideas if you’re looking for ways to find community:
• Find a Breakthrough T1D event near you.
• Join a Facebook or Instagram group for people with T1D.
• Explore a new hobby or class to meet people with shared interests.
• Attend a 12-step meeting for community and support, such as Emotions Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, ACOA, or Overeaters Anonymous.
• Connect with your local church, synagogue, or religious institution for support groups, volunteer opportunities, or social events.
You never know how a single moment of connection could lead to something amazing.
