APA is disappointed by today's ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, which states that school officials in Montgomery County, Maryland, may not require young children to participate in lessons that include books their parents find objectionable because of LGBTQ+ content.

APA filed an amicus brief in the case, Mahmoud vs. Taylor, arguing that opt-out policies may signal to students that respect and inclusion are optional values in school and operate like other forms of state-sanctioned discrimination to create an environment intolerant of LGBTQ+ students.

I am posting about the words 'ATTENTION SEEKING' this week - whether as used to describe a child, or a child's behaviour. A concern that is often voiced when I explore this topic is that if we respond to 'attention seeking' by giving attention then we are reinforcing negative behaviours.

This image by Lindsay Braman - Therapist & Psychoeducator sums up why attending when a child communicates a need for attention is important.

"Seeking attention through behavior is never a person’s first attempt to get that attention. Observing attention-seeking behavior in teens, kids, or adults is typically a sign of an unmet need.

People seek attention through behavior when attempts to get care by asking verbally have failed.

Humans are expressive and creative. It is a sign of a healthy brain that we creatively try different ways to get our needs met."

This is an excerpt from a brilliant and insightful article Lindsay has written on the topic which you can read in full here:

Comprehensive Services, Inc is an established Behavioral Health and Wellness practice looking for an additional therapist, part or full-time, to collaborate with our team, and provide direct counseling services, outreach, referral, and follow-up care coordination to patients. We are located close to Riverside Hospital & Ohio State University.

Our goals are to support a practice culture that is inclusive and diverse with providers from divergent backgrounds and to maintain a conversation about the importance of compassion, connection, gratitude, and meaning, while maintaining a focus on skill development and mutual support. An important goal of our practice is to accommodate clinicians so they can maintain a work life balance allowing time for family, socializing, self-reflection and self-awareness.

Our ideal candidate has a passion for their work, is ambitious to push limits in knowledge and experience, and has a strong desire to bring as much as possible to the table with their clients. We are hoping to find a clinician who want to be a part of a growing program and have a passion for helping children and families. We are open to a Clinician who is able to perform testing/assessments or would be willing to get certified in that area (we are happy to facilitate and pay for this once established).

We provide services to a wide range of clients of all ages and many different cultural backgrounds throughout Ohio. We support a variety of therapy approaches for adults, adolescents and children. Individual, group, family and couple’s therapy or consultation are available.

Our clinicians are able to serve clients in person and/or through telehealth services. We often refer to one another for therapy, collaboration and for assessments for clients or the client family members. Treatment times may be offered on weekends and evenings as well as during regular office hours. Scheduling is flexible and at the clinician’s convenience. You have access to electronic medical records if you wish for documentation and treatment planning. Our clinicians have keys to the office and come and go as they please.

Clinicians share training opportunities and information about different treatment and assessment approaches through our biweekly case consultation and supervision sessions. Providers without an independent license may receive supervision individually and/or through group supervision.

We require a Master’s degree or higher, which is acceptable to Counseling, Social Work or Psychological licensing boards.

Compensation for services is above average compared to other practices. Referrals are screened to determine insurance coverage for services and prospective clients are informed about their financial responsibility prior to beginning treatment (i.e. copays, deductibles, and limits of coverage if they are using insurance). Referrals are directed to clinicians based on their identified areas of treatment interest.

In addition to above average pay we also include the following benefits (dependent on contractual agreement):
-Flexible Scheduling
-Remote Work and Office Space Availability
-Tuition Reimbursement Support
-On-Going Training/CEU Allowances
-Wellness Membership Fees Reimbursement
-Patient leads and referrals (We have patients ready to be seen)
-Health Benefits

You should know that we are a strong practice with a solid history in the area. Our current office is in a prime location with opportunities to expand into different locations on the horizon. Comprehensive Services is dedicated to promoting the dignity and well being of our clients, as well as all who are involved in their care. We strive to assure that our services are rendered in a competent and compassionate manner that is completely confidential.

As a Clinician you will be responsible for providing services to individuals to promote optimum mental health and wellness. You will be assisting individuals, families, and/or couples with a variety of mental health and wellness concerns based on your clinical interests, skill set, and passion.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
-Provide mental health assessments, counseling, referrals and intervention services as well as complete documentation when necessary.
-Monitors clients over time to ascertain treatment progress
-Identifies behaviors that could interfere with treatment and recovery
-Develops and/or completes individualized treatment plans and/or behavioral contracts
