Yesterday was World Mental Health Day and it's great to see so many articles about how to improve our own wellbeing. Mental health is just as important as physical health and developing mindfulness can help us be in the present moment more, reducing stress and anxiety. One of my favourite apps is Headspace. I've forgotten to take care of myself today so I've just listened to one of the three minute sessions to help clear my mind and refocus.

Are you struggling to sleep at night? Try the 4-7-8 breathing technique. 1) Slowly and calmly breath in through your nose, hold for 4 seconds. 2) Hold your breath for 7 seconds, taking care to remain relaxed. 3) Finally breathe out through your mouth for a further 8 seconds - try to keep your breath even when doing so.

The 4-7-8 technique is useful when trying to fall asleep, but also during periods of stress and anxiety. It works to both slow down and lengthen your breath, increasing the amount of oxygen in your body, whilst reducing the amount of CO2. You will become more relaxed, hectic thoughts will dissipate, and you may even feel slightly sedated. It's a go-to approach for many, and the only thing they remember in the morning is beginning to count.
