Handmade blankets, crafted with care and love from our community, bring warmth and comfort to our patients. Thank you to the Bon Secours — St. Mary's Hospital palliative care team in Richmond, Virginia, who made this special gesture possible!

Thanks to nurse Abbey De Santis and social workers Kelsey Wooten, LCSW, and Anna Jones, MSW, our patients are feeling the love. With help from their amazing moms, Anna’s mother’s church group delivered the first batch of blankets.

These handmade blankets offer not just warmth, but also a reminder of the love and compassion that surrounds our patients. 💗

Congratulations to our Bon Secours — Memorial Regional Medical Center (MRMC) team for earning the prestigious three-star rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for patient care and outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures. This three-star rating, which denotes the highest category of quality, places MRMC for the first time among the elite for heart bypass surgery in the United States and Canada, becoming one of just 195 programs across North America to achieve this distinguished status in cardiac care.

“A three-star designation is the most sought-after recognition by open heart surgery programs across the United States. We are proud to see the dedication, skill and teamwork of our Bon Secours — Richmond cardiac surgery program at Memorial Regional Medical Center recognized with this achievement,” says Brody Wehman, MD, who was the lead cardiac surgeon and director of cardiac surgery at MRMC during the time of designation. “These three-star ratings reflect our team’s unwavering commitment to clinical excellence, patient safety and compassionate care. We are grateful for the trust of our patients to care for them during some of their most vulnerable times, and it is our honor to provide this level of care to our community.”

MRMC has served the greater Mechanicsville area since 1998 and is nationally recognized for clinical excellence in cardiac and stroke care. In 2023, MRMC opened a new CVICU, the Cecil R. and Edna S. Hopkins Center for Cardiovascular Excellence. It features a “Universal Bed” model that allows patients to remain in the same ICU throughout their stay, improving patient safety and satisfaction.

Southern Virginia is experiencing a growing need for accessible, outpatient mental health services, and at Bon Secours — Southern Virginia Medical Center in Emporia, Virginia, we’re rising to meet that need with compassion, innovation and care.

We are proud to announce the launch of our Behavioral Health Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) — a new service designed to expand access, provide early intervention, and offer step-down care that helps prevent hospitalization. This program is more than a service; it’s a reflection of our ongoing commitment to evolving with the needs of the Emporia community.

The IOP model allows individuals to receive structured, multi-day therapy while continuing their daily lives — maintaining connections with family, work and community. It’s a powerful alternative to inpatient hospitalization, focused on preventative, patient-centered care right here in the community.

This program offers a compassionate, expert-led path to healing and stability for a wide range of individuals and diagnoses. This is only the beginning of expanded, community-based behavioral health services at SVMC — and we’re honored to walk this journey with you.
