Taking the first step isn't easy, but seeking support can light the way through the darkest times. 💙 You're not alone—every journey matters.

We are extremely grateful for the caring donors who made it possible for Andrew and many others just like him to get the help needed to find hope and healing during life’s storm.

Andrew Branch couldn't escape the darkness that consumed his thoughts. Thankfully, generous gifts from donors helped him find the professional support he desperately needed. Andrew benefited from the Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) at Bon Secours - St. Mary's Medical Center.

Andrew's mother Shana noticed changes in her son during the COVID pandemic. A series of sudden deaths within their extended family, including Andrew's grandfather, compounded matters. But it was a concussion Andrew suffered in 2022 that sent him spiraling emotionally. That's when Shana and her husband Andy knew they needed to seek help for their son.

"If there's any question about why you should give to this program, it's because it saves lives," says Andy. "We are living proof of that. Our son is living proof of that. He was born in St. Mary's and he was reborn there as well."

“They saved my life,” Mike Tucker says. “And every member of the care team, including the technicians, the nurses, everyone, were right there with me throughout the entire ordeal. In rural areas like this, having a provider like Bon Secours is important because it allows greater access to and quality of health care services, without having to drive too far.”

What started as a routine checkup turned into a life-saving diagnosis for Mike.

“I had just retired and moved down to Blackstone from Chicago to be close to my parents,” he says. “I was working out at the gym, just living life. Not one of my previous doctors had ever said anything about why I have high blood pressure. I’ve had it for nearly 30 years. If they only would have looked further.”

During Mike's routine checkup, Bon Secours physician Dr. Dennis Swann referred Mike to Allison Longest, APC, who runs a weekly cardiology outreach clinic within the Bon Secours — Blackstone Family Practice Center in Blackstone, Virginia. After ordering a cardiac echocardiogram to see if there was something else going on with Mike's heart, the team found a life-threatening aneurysm that had been there for years.

Thanks to the persistence and dedication of our team at our Blackstone Family Practice Center and the expertise of cardiac surgeon Dr. Brody Wehman, Mike was able to receive the surgery he needed.

“I’m just grateful for the entire team. They were fantastic," Mike shares. He credits the rural access to Bon Secours for his diagnosis and successful treatment.

We're celebrating Mike's recovery! Five months after his surgery, he is back to crushing it at the gym and feeling great! Thank you, Mike, for trusting us with your care!

And a huge shout-out to the amazing teamwork and compassionate care our teams at Blackstone Family Practice Center and Memorial Regional Medical Center continue to show our patients and community.

With the support of our Bon Secours Foundation donors, more women like Cynthia can access lifesaving imaging services close to home. The new Women’s Imaging Center in Portsmouth brings hope and care to Hampton Roads! 💙

Discovering a lump in her breast sent Cynthia Pickens’ brain in many directions. The shock left her unsure where to turn. Thanks to donor support of women’s imaging services in Norfolk, she learned she had a team of professionals on her side.

“I always use Bon Secours for my annual mammogram,” she says. “When I discovered a lump in my breast, my doctor immediately sent me there for the special mammogram I needed.”

Thanks to donors, more women in the Hampton Roads region will have access to superior care. A new Women’s Imaging Center opened in June to serve the Portsmouth area. Cynthia is sure patients will welcome the convenience of the new facility just as she does with hers.

Neighbors, partners and leaders recently gathered for the ribbon-cutting and blessing of the newly opened Bon Secours — Center for Healthy Living in Petersburg.

The new facility brings community-based health services, including primary care, school physicals, immunizations and health screenings to area residents. In addition to offering access to affordable health services, it will provide the community with helpful resources for housing, evictions, assistance with medical bills and food banks.

During the event, Mike Lutes, Virginia State President and president of Bon Secours — Richmond, shared that, “this Center is not just a building. It’s a sign of our ongoing investment in the health and well-being of this region. It’s a fulfillment of a promise.”

When Bon Secours welcomed Southside Medical Center to our ministry in 2020, we made a promise to extend our Mission and our community health work in the southern reaches of our market.

With the Center and other recent efforts like the new Violence Response Suite with dedicated forensic nurses, victim advocates, and community health workers, and partnering with local community organizations, we are delivering on that promise.

Congratulations to the team involved in launching this welcome addition to our community.
