Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus when certain cells start growing too quickly. Although the exact trigger isn’t fully clear, researchers believe a mix of genes, hormones—especially estrogen and progesterone—and environmental factors all play a part.

Many women with fibroids never notice any issues, but when symptoms appear they often include very heavy or prolonged periods, a constant feeling of pressure or fullness in the lower belly, frequent trips to the bathroom, trouble fully emptying the bladder, constipation, or lower back pain. In some cases the heavy bleeding can lead to iron deficiency and anemia, while fibroids located near the womb’s opening can make it harder to get pregnant. Doctors usually spot fibroids through imaging tests like an ultrasound or MRI scan.

Treatment depends on how bad the symptoms are and whether you want to have children. Options range from simply watching and waiting, to medications that shrink fibroids or control bleeding, to minimally invasive procedures like uterine artery embolization. In more severe cases, surgical removal of fibroids or even the entire uterus may be recommended.
