A research team including University of Arizona Comprehensive Cancer Center members Steffan T. Nawrocki, PhD, and Jennifer S. Carew, PhD, have identified a novel biomarker that may predict which patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) are most likely to benefit from a targeted combination therapy involving autophagy inhibition.

“This could be an important step toward personalizing treatment for patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma,” said Nawrocki.

Junaid Arshad, MD, MS, from the University of Arizona Comprehensive Cancer Center sheds light on a crucial health issue affecting minority populations, particularly Hispanics and Native Americans. H. pylori, a bacteria found in the stomach, is more common in these groups due to socioeconomic and healthcare access challenges. This untreated infection can lead to stomach cancer, marking H. pylori as a significant risk factor. By boosting educational awareness, enhancing public health care initiatives, improving screening methods, and providing treatment, we can reduce the risk and health disparities in these communities. Let's work together for a healthier future.

Our congratulations to Samantha Moya, for earning a Master's degree in Public Health. In her response to why she works in cancer research, she wrote, "I became interested in cancer research through my MPH internship, where I worked on a study addressing the psychosocial needs and quality of life among cancer survivors. This experience, combined with my clinical background, deepened my passion for improving outcomes through evidence-based, patient-centered interventions." Our congratulations to Bryce Wilson, for earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular and Cellular biology, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry. In his response to why he works in cancer research, he wrote, "By increasing our understanding of the fundamental cellular mechanisms that go awry in diseases like cancer, we can build better therapeutics. I love microscopy and molecular biology so getting to apply techniques in these areas to answer questions about cancer biology has been amazing!." “The Madrid train bombings on March 11, 2004,” he said. “Our group was supposed to have been riding one of those trains, but we had a last-minute change in schedule.” That was the day that gave Aaron Scott the perspective and clarity that crystallized his resolve to become the person he is today.

“I watched live coverage of the attack and first responders on TV with my host family,” Scott said. “This was the turning point where I decided I would make the most of my gifts and dedicate my life to becoming a physician scientist.”

Why do some men face higher cancer risks and poorer outcomes? A study initiated by Dan Theodorescu, MD, PhD, professor of urology and cellular and molecular biology, offers new insight.

Published in Nature, the research is the first to define how the loss of the Y chromosome in white blood cells and immune cells may be associated with lower cancer survival rates.

Dr. Theodorescu is also director of the University of Arizona Comprehensive Cancer Center and serves as the Nancy C. and Craig M. Berge Endowed Chair. His work advances our understanding of s*x differences in cancer biology — paving the way for more targeted and effective treatments.
