Vivien K. ZAK, LCSW-R "You have not grown old, and it is not too late
To dive into your increasing depths
Where life calmly gives out its own secret."
-R M Rilke (1875-1926)

For 25 years I worked in various nonprofit social service agencies serving a broad swath of New York City humanity -- from children through to octogenarians -- on an even broader array of issues. I worked with individuals, couples, groups and families. During much of that time I also had a part-time private practice. My areas of expertise came to be mental health, substance abuse/addiction and trauma; those were the constants in all the places I worked. Add to that: Throughout my life I have been interested in the nexus between our inner lives and what is -- for lack of a better term -- called 'spirituality,' yet found few ways to explore this on a clinical level. In 2012 I completed a Post-Masters Certificate Program in "Social Work and Spirituality" at New York University's Silver School of Social Work. In my work with individuals I incorporate a deeply humanistic, humble and questioning stance. Truly supporting what people do comes from an authentic understanding of who they are in all realms -- mind, body and soul/spirit.

It's harder to stay in the grey areas, the areas of uncertainty, of ambivalence, of nuance...and it takes education, patience, practice and, sometimes, guidance. It is worth knowing, or remembering, that the in-between is where the heart and soul truly reside, away from divisiveness and rancor and hatred, and fear, away from the tribal us vs. the tribal them.

When we are scared, we divide the world into black and white. Then we make the decisions we’ll most regret
