I often leave taking care of myself for last, and that has lead to unhealthy habits that are hard to unlearn. I have come to the realization that I cannot be my best self in my education, career, family, or relationships if I am not making sure all my basics needs are met. I am putting in the hard work, attempting to cook, trying new foods, getting a personal trainer, and spending hours researchin
g the essential question “What does a healthy and balanced lifestyle look like?”
I am a trained scientist, public health professional, and a teacher. I know how to read the scientific research and communicate it to others. I also want to share my hard work so that we can all support each other on this journey to a healthier life. As you read about me, you will learn that I did not grow up eating vegetables, and I am still learning how to get them into my diet. Never heard of quinoa, kale, or spaghetti squash? They will be your best friends! I will introduce you. In this community you will find information on nutrition and recipes and will find cooking and exercise tips for any person who is changing their life for the healthier (aren’t we all!). I will also provide some of my favorite inspirational and motivational quotes and pictures. I will also share my personal journey, to show that this struggle is real, attainable, and worth it.

My Story
I was born and raised in South Florida, where public transportation is scarce, walking anywhere is too far and sticky, and fast food and chain restaurants are rampant. Both my parents were overweight. I have no memories of anyone ever telling me to “Eat your vegetables.”
My parents were divorced and my mother worked full time, so it was usual for us to grab McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, Pollo Tropical, Dairy Queen, or Taco Bell; if it was fast and cheap; it was our dinner choice. I remember drinking Coca-cola with every meal and not thinking twice about it. My favorite meal was white bread bologna sandwiches with cheese. My mother passed away when I was 15, so I moved in with my father. His newly wed wife indulged in “southern” cooking, which meant everything was fried, heavily buttered, salted, or sugared, and covered in ketchup or mayo. I did not gain any weight until college where no sports, buffet style dining halls, alcohol, and late pizza nights took its toll. I was in denial that there was a problem until my doctor told me she was concerned about my weight gain and she referred me to a nutritionist. It was a slap in the face. “I’m only suppose to eat that much pasta?!”
It has been as slow, still ongoing, climb to a healthier lifestyle ever since. I am actively trying to learn to like fruits and vegetables and trying to find a balance for my love of cheese and chocolate. In 2008 I moved to Berkeley, California to pursue my Master of Science in Environmental Health. It was a culture shock in many ways, including healthy restaurants and fresh food everywhere! I am currently a Chemistry teacher in an inner-city school. I love my students, but my job is stressful and it is easy to neglect my own health. I have committed to take care of myself. I live with my cat, and my wonderful husband, who is also on this journey to learn to embrace a healthier life style. Being healthy is a life change, not a goal. It is not always easy, but why reinvent the wheel? Come with me on this journey. Learn from my mistakes. Benefit from my research. If I can do it, you can do it. You can be healthy too!
