We do not see patients under the age of 18. Simply put, functional medicine is the future of health care. Many traditional health care providers treat the symptoms of an illness, usually with pharmaceuticals. Disease is often treated as something pre-ordained, a result of genetics or environment. No attempt is made to find a root cause of a problem nor do most physicians consider more nuanced heal

th care practices like diet and lifestyle management. As Dr. Mark Hyman, the president of the Institute for Functional Medicine, noted, this country doesn’t “have a healthcare system. We have a disease management system.”

Functional medicine involves understanding the origins of chronic disease, in the hopes of preventing its onset. If that’s not possible, doctors who practice functional medicine seek more thorough and innovative ways to treat complex disease.

You don’t need to complicate your schedule or life any further. You don’t need more rules, to dos or boxes to check. Instead take a step back and decide what is necessary to improve your current life. Maybe you need more flexibility or fun in your life. Maybe you need more time with friends, quiet time or adventure. Maybe we all need to be living and enjoying our lives rather than micro analyzing it.

I’m an integrative physician — and I smudge my home with sage and palo santo.
Not because I’ve abandoned science.
But because I believe that healing has always lived at the intersection of body, mind, environment, and spirit. In fact these days I am embodying this even more.
Long before modern medicine, cultures around the world understood that health isn’t just biochemical but hinges on the relationships with ourselves, other humans, nature and the environment.
We exchange energy with our environment especially our homes, and our nervous systems respond to our surroundings.
When we’re burned out, stuck, or carrying collective stress from a world that feels crazy and off-balance small rituals can act as reset signals to our body, our brain, and our psyche. Sage can act to eliminate some bacteria from the air purifying it. Shamanic healers have used it to remove negative energy while Palo Santo has been used for centuries to create a positive effect. It contains terpenes such as D -limonene which helps with stress and relaxation.
Is it measurable in a lab. No.
Is it medicine in the oldest sense of the word? Absolutely. I’m science-trained and spiritually curious and I believe we all have the permission to hold both.
