TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

Traumatic brain injury usually results from a violent blow to the head or body. An object that penetrates brain tissue, such as a bullet or shattered piece of skull, also can cause traumatic brain injury.
Mild traumatic brain injury may affect your brain cells temporarily. More-serious traumatic brain injury can result in bruising, torn tissues, bleeding and other physical damage to the brain. These injuries can result in long-term complications or death.
Ideal management of traumatic brain injury requires detailed monitoring and nursing care for all body systems.

The Partograph / Partogram

The World Health Organization recommends use of a partograph for every child delivery by a skilled health worker. This is not just a document but a decision-making tool. Proper use of the partograph decreases the incidence of labor complications and ultimately the maternal and newborn mortality rates.
For proper interpretation:
1. Plotting the partograph must only be started at 4cm of cervical dilatation and above
2. The first point of plotting (cervical dilatation) should be on the alert line
3. The fetal heart, maternal pulse and uterine contractions should be assessed every 30 minutes whereas a vaginal examination should be conducted at least every 4 hours during the first stage of labor
4. If the labor curve crosses to the right of the alert line, review the strength of contractions, position, presentation, size of the fetus, bladder fulness and act accordingly
