For many fall sport athletes, their seasons are winding down.

The end of a sports season often brings a mix of emotions for athletes. The season’s demands take a toll on an athlete mentally and physically.

The off-season is the perfect time for athletes to implement self-reflection practices. Self-reflection allows athletes to become more aware of the challenges and successes they experienced throughout the season.

Check out this post for tips for incorporating strategies once your season is finished.

Thank you for having me speak with your professional baseball athletes today! We had a great conversation about what it means to “fail forward” during performance, examine elements of control, and implement strategies to help refocus in the moment. It’s awesome that you’re providing this programming for your athletes!

Keep pushing forward!

Perception is key for every athlete! How they perceive a challenge in a situation will impact their next steps.

There’s a big difference between perceiving a challenge as a threat or an opportunity for growth. When a challenge is perceived as a threat, an athlete might feel that they don’t have the necessary resources to meet the demands and feel defeated. When viewing a challenge as an opportunity for growth, an athlete can recognize the demands, evaluate their resources, and develop strategies for success.

Next time you face a challenge, pause and ask yourself, “Is this a threat or a growth opportunity?”

There’s Power in the Pause

Learning to pause creates an opportunity to be present in the moment.

1️⃣ One deep breath
2️⃣ One focus cue
3️⃣ One intention

Practice implementing a pause to help learn to respond instead of react.

🎯 Mid-Semester Mindset for Athletes 🎯

Most student-athletes are near the halfway point of the semester and experiencing increased demands of academics and athletics. It’s easy to feel stressed and overwhelmed juggling midterms, coursework, practices, and games!

Prioritizing self-care and well-being is so important during this time. Consider focusing on these four strategies to help care for the mind and body.

Athletes of all ages and experience levels should be incorporating mental skills training PROACTIVELY, instead of waiting for an issue to arise!

Think of it being similar to prehabilitation exercises to prevent injury! Athletes spend time developing and training their body for performance, which is what should also be done with their mind!

Adding these mental skills as part of their program helps ENHANCE SELF-AWARENESS AND SELF-REGULATION, which helps athletes implement coping strategies proactively!
