Procrastination, Writer’s Block, and a Top 20 Finish: Lessons from the Kalemba Short Story Prize 2018 Edition.

In November of 2017, a friend of mine, Mwaka Mpundu, sent me a link to the Kalemba Short Story Prize 2018 Competition. At the time, I was dealing with major creative block and the pressures of university life. Writer's block had hit hard, and I just couldn’t think of anything to write.

Weeks flew by and before I knew it, I was two days away from the competition deadline, December 15th 2017 with nothing to show. Yet, sometimes pressure brings clarity, and ideas suddenly began flowing. I spent the next few hours writing non-stop, pushing myself to reach the submission requirements.

I submitted my story, unsure if it made sense, but relieved that I had at least given it a shot. Then, I moved on. To my surprise, in February 2018, I learned that my story had made the Kalemba Short Story Prize’s top 20 list—despite being written at the last minute.

While I didn’t make the top 5, the experience was both an inspiration and a wake-up call. It showed me the importance of getting things done in the moment, how much better it could have been had I written it in good time and not waiting for the 'perfect time.' My name and story are listed on number 12 on the list.😁

Key takeaway: Don't let writer's block or procrastination hold you back. Sometimes, just starting is the most important step. Whether it's perfect or not, progress is better than standing still.

Networking that Matters

Collaboration and networking have been key in shaping my career, and I'd love to share a personal experience that highlights their importance.

In 2021, I attended a workshop for creatives; Connect for Culture which was coordinated by the Swedish Embassy in Zambia where I met someone who would play a significant role in my journey—Tivo Shikapwasha. I was just starting my media career at Muvi TV, still figuring things out. On the last day of the workshop, I struck up a conversation with him about my work, including scriptwriting. We exchanged ideas and contact info, but months passed with no communication.

Out of the blue, Tivo reached out with a scriptwriting opportunity. It was a major gig, one that would push my creativity and open new doors. Since then, we’ve worked on several projects together and continue to collaborate on even bigger, more exciting ventures.

This experience taught me that building meaningful connections isn’t about instant results but about planting seeds that grow over time. So, to all emerging professionals: network, collaborate, and be patient. You never know which conversation will lead to your next big break. Stay tuned for more exciting things in the pipeline!

Content Creation is Hard!😅

Being a content creator is all about striking the balance between creativity and connection. From competing in the 2022 Diamond TV Presenter Search where I was second runner up to working on the 2024 Diamond TV Presenter Search was an absolute blast!! especially when we expanded to Kitwe and Livingstone to audition new talent. Documenting the experience was both challenging and fun, but one of my favorite moments came during the auditions in Kitwe.

I had this bright idea to give prospective contestants a little sneak peek into what it would feel like to work with us on set while they auditioned. And what better way to do that than using the iconic intro from Family Matters? Remember how each character would get their moment, smiling at the camera? It felt like a perfect, nostalgic fit for the contestants as they auditioned.

Fun Fact: Creating that TikTok video wasn’t just about fun—it was a great opportunity to connect with the contestants in a memorable way. But let me tell you, being a content creator takes serious work! Editing, aligning the right music, making sure the transitions pop—it’s a process that requires a lot of time and effort. But seeing the final result and the reactions? Totally worth it!

How many of you remember the Family Matters TV Series? Have a great weekend!

From a Recommendation to a Career: My Journey as a Voice-Over Artist

My journey into voice-over work began in 2021 when my friend AJ recommended I try out for a local radio station, Real Radio in Lusaka. I did a few jingles for them, and what started as a fun experiment quickly turned into a new career path. Soon, random clients started coming in—some I can hardly remember—but a few standout names include ESAMI School of Business, The Urban Hotel Zambia, and most notably, Diamond TV, where I am the main female voice.

But it hasn’t always been easy. Voice-over work can be challenging, especially when it comes to diversifying your voice to suit different tones and intonations. Whether it's a commercial, a serious documentary, or a lively promo, you constantly need to adapt. One of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences was during the Diamond TV Presenter Search Voice Over Challenge, where I competed and excelled with my voice-over skills, pushing myself to hit just the right tone to stand out. After a great mentorship session delivered by Kamiza Chikula & Chilu Lemba who joined in virtually I had no choice but to give it my best!

Here's a link to the voice over challenge episode of the Diamond TV Presenter Search S3. I come in at 20:12😁 https://lnkd.in/dxS_z--K

Pro Tip: It’s not just about having a great voice; it’s about understanding how to bring different emotions and energies to the script. Keep an eye out for some voice over tips I’ll be sharing soon.

If you’ve ever thought about trying voice-over work or have a favourite moment in the field, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

The Power of Storytelling in Public Health Communication

In today’s fast-paced media landscape, storytelling has become a powerful tool to drive awareness and behavioural change in public health. As a creative who blended my passion for arts/media and health, eventually gaining a Bachelors Degree in Public Health which led to work experience as a Communications Specialist and Media Producer, I’ve had the privilege to work on impactful campaigns that bring complex health issues to light through compelling narratives. Some projects that stand out for me in my career are:

- Making use of my Degree in Public Health and Co-produced the Youth Care Talk Show on behalf of Copper Rose Zambia that looked into reproductive rights of adolescents and health promotion in a nutshell. We tackled some very difficult topics that the average teenager needed the answers to through the use of peer to peer education sessions and word on the street from young people. The reception of the program was outstanding.
- Hosting 2 separate Child Health Week television programs in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Zambia where we discussed the importance of child nutrition and the dangers involved of not paying attention to a child’s nutritional needs and the importance of immunization and why it is one of the first lines of immune support young children need.
- Hosting the television program where we discussed the need to support more women in politics and how best we can raise awareness towards the cause.
- The environmental documentary series I co-produced on behalf of the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), which brought attention to crucial environmental and public health issues across the country.
- A climate change competition ‘The Shift: Finding the Green Tamanga’ that I scripted and co-produced on behalf of the European Union in Zambia. Suffice to say, we have many passionate young people who are involved in tackling climate change related problems and are providing amazing solutions!
By highlighting real stories, we not only educated but also motivated communities to take action.

What’s one powerful story you’ve encountered in public health or media that made a lasting impact on you?
