Some see herb work and plant medicine as an esthetic. I see it as autonomy, revolution, liberation, and culture work. To understand how to heal yourself, to be able to serve your family and community, even when things shut down around you. To know that you can do something to support your body's wellness, even if it's "basic," is knowledge and wisdom many folks don't have nowadays.
I hope that you will join me for my Grandma's Hands® Pregnancy and Postpartum Herbs and Nutrition in the Southern Tradition 6 Week Online Course starting Aug. 7, 2025. Learn how to tend to yourself and pregnant mamas with folkhealing from the Black Southern Tradition.

This month, we’d like to spotlight Dr. Hannah Harris, founder and executive director of / Signs Community Services , located in Springfield, Missouri. Water Signs Community Perinatal Services began in 2021 as a simple idea sparked by a classroom project. This started as a student-led exploration of the hidden costs of womanhood & then led to the creation of a maternity clothing closet. Since then, the work has blossomed into a growing, community rooted organization committed to reproductive justice and holistic perinatal support.

As a solo mom, full spectrum doula, childbirth educator, yoga teacher, and clinical psychologist, Dr. Harris brings both lived experience and deep intention to her work. Water Signs Community Perinatal Services is a recognized Perinatal Safe Spot, offering culturally grounded doula care, mental health support, and long-term community connections especially for BIPOC families. Dr. Harris is reminds us that sometimes, the most powerful movements begin with just one small idea and a whole lot of heart.

We invite you to support and uplift Water Signs Community Perinatal Services by spreading the word, connecting with their work, and continuing to build community alongside them.

Every Mother Counts’ Christy Turlington is a trailblazer in championing - one of the few who used her platform to highlight the existing problem of racial disparities in the US. Her work speaks for itself! Thank you Christy!

🎥 15 years ago this week, our founder & president Christy Turlington Burns released her film, No Woman, No Cry — the powerful documentary that led to the creation of Every Mother Counts.

The film follows the journeys of pregnant women in four countries — Tanzania, Bangladesh, Guatemala, and the U.S. — highlighting the challenges they faced to give birth safely.

This film marked Christy’s directorial debut and informed the mission of Every Mother Counts to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for everyone, everywhere.
