When most people think of yoga, they think of contorting limbs into pretzel shapes and chanting aum.
And yes, yoga can include these things. But it is SO much more vast than that.
Our body is the blueprint for what we experience inside our minds, in our own individual universes. When we open the body, it feels GOOD, wonderful hormones and endorphins are released on a physical level. But we also remove blockages to energy flowing freely through the body and help to release nervous system tension that our body has held onto in stressful situations and not released.
When our nervous system is happy and our energy is flowing, we don't just feel good at the time. We feel good afterwards too. The internal narrative and stories we hear in our mind are transformed and we feel BALANCED. Not just in holding Tree Pose, but throughout the day, the year, through life. Through the easy times and the hard times.
What starts as something that feels good and sculpts and opens the body becomes increasingly a spiritual journey of inner transformation. The instant feeling of being energised and relaxed is what initially keeps us coming back to our mat, but the shift in our perspective is what keeps us disciplined over the course of a lifetime.
There are also so many types of 'Yoga' that even if you've tried it and thought it wasn't for you, or have preconceived notions of what it might be like, I'd encourage you to challenge your beliefs 🙏
Yin Yoga is so relaxing and accessible and meditative, and Vinyasa Yoga is strong and challenging in a dynamic movement meditation. Many people comment it's tougher than a gym workout! Whilst in Yin, people have been known to fall asleep during the class.Yin and Yang. Both are accessible to beginners.
All practices end in Shavasana, which all yogis have fallen asleep in or drifted off into the cosmos at times. Either way, we end all classes the same way: reset and chillllllled.
