The inconvenient reality that food just isn’t what it used to be! Modern agriculture has robbed our soils of essential minerals and has therefore robbed our plants of these nutrients as well. Our plants need over fifty vitamins and minerals to survive, yet our abused and overused soils will typically only receive phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium. Our bodies cannot manufacture these essential com
pounds. So, if the plants that we are eating are nutrient and vitamin deficient then where are we supposed to obtain these from? Vitamin and mineral supplementation? Most will say we don’t need supplements – you can receive everything you need from your food and diet alone. The frightening thing about our diets is that most of the population is consuming a diet laden with additives, hormones, pesticides, herbicides and preservatives. Yes, eating an organic diet is a great start, but it is actually more than simply ingesting the chemicals that should concern us. Our topsoil is depleted, the air we are breathing is toxic, our tap water contains toxins, the chemicals we constantly use around our homes to clean are toxic and are absorbed through our largest organ – our skin. Thanks to our exposure to environmental pollutants we may also need higher doses of nutrients and vitamins to support us. It’s crazy, and it’s sad that our society has reached a point where supplementation is required to maintain optimum health. Most of us are trying to eat as healthy as we can however most people fail to meet the bare minimum required fruit and vegetable servings. Supplementation doesn’t replace a healthy diet but until our soils can be replenished and our plants given everything they need it’s a tool we are going to need to use if we plan on keeping our bodies and lives healthy. Numerous studies show that by increasing your vitamin and mineral intake you can promote weight loss, boost your immunity, reduce stress levels, combat depression, increase energy levels and reduce cravings, improve your sleep, regulate digestion and prevent diseases from occurring. So many people – and I most definitely can relate to this – think we are healthy. We exercise, we eat clean, we drink lots of water and stay away from “bad” foods. The truth is we are all toxic – It’s inescapable. I guess the thing that I have come to realise is that the foods we think are “good” aren’t necessarily good for us. They’re depleted, they’re not giving us what we need and our bodies and health suffer from it. Do you think it’s normal to constantly feel tired and drained? Do you think it’s normal to suffer constant headaches, inflammation, joint pain? To not be able to concentrate for more than half an hour? To be craving things everyday that we know are not going to contribute to our health in any way – sugars, salts, caffeine? It’s because our bodies are not functioning the way they were designed to because they’re not being given what they actually need. They are suffering. Cleanse your body from the inside out. Educate yourself about what you’re putting into your mouth. You will be surprised about how good health should actually feel and live a life in a body that is functioning how it was designed to. Your present self and future self will love you for it.
