Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome – PCOS & Oral Health

Signs – Gum Bleeding and Swelling, mouth odour

Cause – Excess hormone (oestrogen ,progesterone & androgen) production hence increased growth of bacteria in gingival fluid (gum spaces)

Treatment –
➢ Brushing twice a day for 2 min preferably with an electric toothbrush such as Oral b Pro 2 which has 3D cleaning technology with a 2 minutes timer and pressure sensor

➢ Massaging gums after brushing with finger– this increases the blood supply and reduces swelling

➢ Periodic visit to the dentist – Cleaning and Polishing if advised

➢ Using an antiseptic mouthwash after consulting the Dentist

Signs in the mouth – Oral Malodour , tooth decay , gum disease

Cause – Dry mouth due to anxiety & teeth grinding (clenching)

Treatment –
Using an antiseptic mouthwash
Using a night guard for clenching
Keep body and mouth hydrated by drinking more water
Eating sugar free chewing gum which stimulates saliva production
Visit to the dentist – to find out more about salivary substitues

Treatment
