The first supermoon of 2025 will rise on Oct. 6, appearing close to Saturn for a striking conjunction. Known as the Harvest Moon, it’s the full moon closest to the autumn equinox, historically aiding farmers with extra nighttime light. The moon reaches its full phase at 11:48 p.m. EDT (0348 GMT, Oct. 7) and will be near its closest point to Earth, creating a dramatic “supermoon” that looks slightly larger and brighter than usual. Viewers in the U.S. can watch it rise at sunset in the east, glowing orange-yellow just above the horizon. Saturn will shine about 15° above and to the right of the moon, with the Square of Pegasus visible overhead. The best views are near moonrise, when the “moon illusion” makes it seem even bigger. This event offers perfect opportunities for skywatching and astrophotography.
