WheatGrass

WheatGrass From the farm that grew wheatgrass in 1932 for research & AMA acceptance as nutrient-dense human food Pines also still uses one of their laboratories.

The history of wheatgrass and other green superfoods goes back more than 90 years to the research by Charles Schnabel and other scientists who were the first to grow wheatgrass on our farm. Those pioneers also used the same location to produce their whole food powders now used by Pines International. Schnabel’s team discovered that the nutritional-density of wheatgrass and other cereal grass reaches a peak level at a special time. That occurs in the early spring and lasts for only a few days. It is known as the “jointing stage.” In winter wheat growing regions, the stage occurs once each year after a winter of slow growth. Pines is the only green food company to follow the science, including packaging oxygen-free amber glass bottles. Pines International has never and will never use plastic containers which cause loss of nutrition through oxidation and contribute to the plastic pollution on our planet.

Skip the juiced wheatgrass shots—choose Pines Wheat Grass tablets instead. You’ll get the fiber your body needs and the concentrated nutrition of a spinach salad, all in a convenient, easy-to-take form. No smoothie is complete without the whole food goodness of Pines Wheat Grass powder. Add a spoonful to add more dark green, leafy vegetables to your diet. Whole Food wheatgrass is used by laboratories to grow probiotic bacteria. Research at the University of Michigan prove that juices without fiber create the wrong kind of intestinal flora and can damage the intestines.

We own the same farm that Dr. Schnabel and other scientists used for their published research on cereal grass starting in 1932. As our sales have grown, we have added additional acreage.

We are the only grower to cultivate cereal grasses, including wheat grass, barley grass, and oat grass, harvested during the nutrient-dense jointing stage. We carefully follow the extensive scientific and medical research.

The facts are clear: After the jointing stage, the plant drains the cereal grass of its stored nutrition. Cereal grass becomes brown and dead. Its nutrition went to make the flag grass and the developing grain. We have tested competing ingredients that have emerged in the marketplace since we began nearly 50 years ago, in 1976. Few contain real cereal grass. Instead, they contain flag grass.

This video shows the difference between an actual cereal grass and its flag grass. True cereal grass does not contain stems or developing seeds. Its purpose is to build extreme nutrient density through slow growth in cold weather to provide nourishment for the developing grain and the flag grass stems and leaves that support the grain heads.

If you look at the bottom of each flag grass stem, you see dead cereal grass, drained of nutrition to produce the flag grass and grain.

Other growers claim to produce cereal grass but choose to harvest after the cereal grass stage because the yield for flag grass can be many times greater than that of actual cereal grass. By claiming that it is cereal grass when it is flag grass, they can take advantage of the higher price that actual cereal grass commands.

Cereal grasses such as wheatgrass or barleygrass must be grown slowly in cold weather and harvested at a specific time in the spring. They are so nutrient-dense when grown properly that only 3.5 grams of powder or tablets equals more than 50 grams of dark green, leafy vegetables such as spinach.

Studies show that 9 out of 10 people need more dark green leafy foods. Pines green food products offer a convenient and economical way to increase those foods in your diet. Only Pines follows scientific research and grows cereal grass correctly without using irrigation water contaminated by neighboring chemical farmers. Pines has never used chemicals and has been organic for 48 years!

Preparation for next spring's harvest began last month by planting winter cereal grasses. Although the tender one-to-two-inch-long leaves don't grow much in height, they are tiny solar collectors that will capture more than 100 days of sunlight over the winter.

After a dry summer, our farm crew was able to plant more than 200 acres of cereal grass just in time for some nice gentle rains to germinate the seed. After the first of several snows this winter and cold weather, the captured solar energy will cause the roots to grow deep to store the nutrients created by the solar power captured by those dark green, chlorophyll-rich leaves.

This year's wheatgrass harvest was again exceptional. Our farm crew began the harvest just as the first wheatgrass began the nutrient-dense jointing stage, and we finished it a few days later, just as the last area of the wheatgrass field had entered the joining stage.

For this once-a-year spring harvest at the critical jointing stage, we produced 54 totes containing 1,000 kg each of Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Gluten-Free wheatgrass. That equals 15 million servings of spinach or kale at a cost per serving as low as 25 cents.

As you can see in the inset, we extrude the powder into pellets to prevent oxidation. This picture shows some totes waiting for storage in our freezers at -10°C to completely prevent oxidation.

The product is kept in frozen pellet form until we convert them into tablets and powder. Then, the finished product goes into amber glass bottles with special metal caps to keep it in an oxygen-free environment. The seal in the unique metal cap keeps the product fresh for months after opening.

All these steps prevent oxidation, which causes a loss of color and nutrition. Unfortunately, most green food producers do not keep their raw products frozen and then package them into cheap plastic tubs, which offer no oxidation protection. Between sourcing poor-quality ingredients and not being concerned with oxidation, "green foods" in plastic containers are often not green.

Preventing oxidation and harvesting for quality, not quantity, produces high nutrient density. That means more servings per container. Pines Wheat Grass and Barley Grass offer the highest quality and best economic value. With more servings per container, your cost per serving is much less than with poorly grown products mixed with filler ingredients and sold in plastic tubs.

Our 100% pure vegetable powders and tablets contain no filler ingredients. We still follow the growing and harvest standards established in 1932 by Dr. Charles Schanabel. We still use the same farm with world-famous glacial soil and keep our foods frozen in pellet form before packaging them in oxygen-free glass bottles, NEVER PLASTIC.

The PBS program Front Line found that less than 10% of people’s recycled items are recycled. The fossil fuel industry promotes the idea of plastic recycling, so people keep buying items packaged in plastic. All that plastic sent for recycling has resulted in warehouses stuffed with bales of unusable plastic.

All glass is recycled and easily separated from plastic in recycling centers. Unlike plastic, glass is non-toxic and easily recycled.
Companies use recycled glass to make more glass products or grind it back into the sand that produced it. The sand can be used on beaches, to make concrete, or melted back to make more glass bottles and products.

Since 1932, all products from our farm have been packaged in glass, using special metal caps for a tight seal after removing oxygen. This results in an unlimited shelf life that maintains nutrition and color.

The pictures show Pines Wheat Grass tablets and powder in glass on the right and typical products that claim to be “just as good” in petrochemical plastic on the left. The colors show the difference in quality. Moreover, Pines’ products often cost less per serving than greens in plastic containers. Similar comparisons can be made for other Pines products such as Pines Barley Grass and Alfalfa.

Pines Wheat Grass will soon celebrate its 50th Anniversary. It was the original green superfood for the Natural Food Marketplace.

Pines invented the selling points for green superfoods, which are now used by dozens of companies that copied Pines' success.

Pines Wheat Grass and Pines Barley Grass offer a low cost per serving and are of better value than other green foods. Consumers are often surprised that Pines costs less because products in squatty plastic tubs give the illusion that they contain more than our tall, full, oxygen-free glass bottles.

Some products show a content weight about the same as Pines but appear to cost less. Yet, they offer fewer servings per container because they have a larger serving size. The serving size for Pines Wheat Grass and Pines Barley Grass is 3.5 grams.

Some other green food products offer serving sizes of as much as 20 grams for the same nutrition as Pines' 3.5-gram servings. When you divide the price by the number of savings per container, few products offer as good a value as Pines.

Pines Wheat Grass and Pines Barley Grass have more nutrient density because our wheatgrass and barley grass are harvested at a special nutrient-dense time that occurs only once yearly.
Dr. Charles Schnabel, the father of wheatgrass, showed how wheatgrass grown naturally outdoors through the winter contains as much as ten times more nutrition than other greens.

Some products have large serving sizes because they add low-nutrition green ingredients to their blends. Those ingredients cost about 10% as high-quality, nutrient-dense cereal grasses. These companies hope consumers will not divide the cost by the number of servings. Unfortunately for the consumer, such products cost considerably more per serving than Pines' products.

The nutritional levels on labels are based on the nutrition when packaged. Packaging in plastic tubs is not only bad for the environment, but plastic offers very little protection against loss of nutrition by oxidation. That's why, since 1932, all cereal grass products grown on our farm have been packaged in tightly sealed amber glass bottles with oxygen removed to prevent oxidation.

Last week, we planted spring barley in ten fields totaling 180 acres, an average of 18 acres per field. Organic farmers like Pines typically have smaller isolated fields distant from large farms that use poisonous chemicals. Pines International produced the first "green superfood." We continue as the only 100% USDA Certified Organic green foods farmer.

Many ingredients for other green food products sold in plastic tubs are grown on large farms that use chemicals for most crops. Growing organic ingredients for green food products is a sideline for them. Most crops they produce are grown using chemical herbicides and pesticides.

We are different. We are not a large factory farm. We are passionate about organic farming and have always been. We have been 100% USDA Certified Organic since the program began in 1990 and were 100% organic before that. Since starting Pines International in 1976, we have never used chemical herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers in 48 years.

We grow our barleygrass, wheatgrass, and alfalfa on the world-famous glacial soils of Northeastern Kansas. That soil attracted the renowned scientist Dr. Charles Schnabel when he sought to grow the most nutrient-dense cereal grass for human consumption.

Schnabel and his scientific team grew the first cereal grass for humans in 1932 for the world's first multivitamin, Cerophyl. Cerophyl consisted of 100% cereal grass and provided the minimum daily requirement of all known vitamins. Medical research in the 1930s led the American Medical Association to approve it as a nutrient-dense human food in 1939. In their acceptance, the AMA stated that cereal grass powders should be packaged in amber glass bottles with special metal caps to seal in an oxygen-free atmosphere to prevent nutrient loss and lack of color.

Other green foods use plastic containers, which cannot hold an oxygen-free atmosphere. Pines continues to follow the AMA packaging requirements and the science established by Dr. Schnabel. In addition to using the same farm, we continue to operate Schnabel's lab and test every batch for quality.

Isabella likes tablets, and Jonathan likes to mix the powder into juice. Both have been raised to understand the importance of consuming plenty of dark green leafy vegetables.

Other children can be influenced by their friends who think green foods are “yucky.” For kids who resist eating greens, parents can insist that they eat seven Pines Wheat Grass tablets before leaving the table or add a rounded teaspoon to juices or a fruit smoothie with a color more to their liking.

Regardless of the method used, we all must understand that studies by the USDA show that nine out of ten people in today’s societies do not eat enough whole-food dark green leafy vegetables for healthy bodies and a healthy digestive system.

Pines offers convenient and economical ways to increase the amount of these essential foods in your family’s diet.

Get Your Greens with Pines Barley Grass & Matcha Muffins - A Delicious and Nutritious Treat!
Pines Barley Grass is so concentrated that one rounded teaspoon or seven tablets provide a complete serving of a dark green leafy vegetable. The USDA has shown nine out of ten Americans should consume more chlorophyll-rich leafy green foods. Pines Barley Grass is an economical and convenient source of these essential foods for good health.
Most green superfoods are packaged in plastic containers, which offer limited protection against oxidation and loss of nutrition. Only Pines is packaged in amber glass bottles with special metal caps to seal an oxygen-free atmosphere inside the bottle, ensuring the contents are as fresh as the day they were harvested.
Pines is the only green food producer growing, harvesting, and packaging on the company’s farm. Our farm is where the first cereal grass (wheatgrass and barley grass) was grown for human consumption in 1932. We still follow the research from those early days, which led the American Medical Association in 1939 to declare dehydrated whole-food cereal grass a naturally concentrated source of green vegetable nutrition.
Pines has carried on this 92-year tradition of correctly growing cereal grasses such as barley grass and wheatgrass. All our products are grown, packaged, and shipped from our farm. They are USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, and Certified Kosher. We test each batch to ensure it is gluten-free and at the peak nutritional level.

We are sad to report the passing of Emily Sloan, the daughter of Dr. Charles F. Schnabel, who Steve Meyerowitz, author of "Wheatgrass: Nature's Finest Medicine," called "The Father of Wheatgrass."
Schnabel's research also inspired Ann Wigmore, who published books and promoted wheatgrass. Several other authors dedicated their books about wheatgrass to him.

Emily often commented on Pines' pages. She attributed much of her 95 years of excellent health to Pines Wheat Grass and to starting life with her father insisting that she, her brothers, and her sister consume daily servings of cereal grass such as wheatgrass and barley grass.

Ms. Sloan visited Pines International twice. Her last visit was a family reunion honoring the work and memory of her father. In this picture from 2019, wearing a red sweater, she is with her family in front of Pines production facilities, where her father produced the world's first multivitamin in 1932.

Schnabel's scientific team sold their multivitamin, Cerophyl, in pharmacies worldwide. Produced before the invention of synthetic vitamins, Cerophyl was 100% cereal grass. It supplied the minimum daily requirement of all known vitamins.

Emily graduated from nearby Kansas University with a Bachelor of Music Education in 1948. She was a dedicated teacher who loved music. In recent years, she was a Friends University Community Orchestra member, where she played the Viola. Her husband Derral passed in 2011. Their children blessed them with 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Schnabel produced Cerophyl on the same farm now owned by Pines. Medical journals published research using Cerophyl. The results caused the American Medical Association in 1939 to proclaim that dehydrated, whole-food, cereal grass powder and tablets are nutrient-dense sources of dark green vegetables.

With some nice rains, our certified organic soybeans are growing. Because they are non-GMO and the seeds are heirlooms, not genetically modified in a laboratory to resist Round-Up herbicide, we have to control weeds without chemicals.

So far, we have cultivated twice to remove weeds mechanically. Our soybeans are too tall for mechanical cultivation, and we will now use hand labor to remove weeds.

Keeping weeds out of Certified Organic soybeans without poisonous chemicals is not easy. Yet, the end product will go into Certified Organic foods that do not have the high levels of poison in them that GMO foods have.

Pines rotates our certified organic cereal grasses, such as Pines Wheat Grass and Pines Barley Grass, with legumes such as soybeans, alfalfa, and red clover. These rotational crops increase the nitrogen in the soil for our cereal grasses. Other companies will purchase the soybeans for their Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified food products.

Our cereal grasses are harvested as young grasses before they produce seed and are an economical and convenient way to increase the poison-free dark-green leafy vegetables in your diet,

The Original Plant Based Super Green Food

The history of wheatgrass and other green superfoods goes back more than 80 years to the research by Charles Schnabel and other scientists. Those pioneers operated out of the same location now used by Pines International. Pines still uses one of their laboratories and many of their fields north of Lawrence, Kansas.
