I smile a lot.
I like to smile.
I smile even if no one smiles at me.
It makes me happier when I smile.
But now I’m wearing a mask.
Now I smile at people but I don’t think they know I’m smiling.
They might be able to tell that I am smiling if they looked at me.
I’m looking at them, eye to eye, but they avoid me.
I’m realizing no one is making eye contact.
Why not?
I think it’s because we feel awkward making eye contact when everyone is wearing a mask.
When we see others wearing masks, it brings up feelings of fear. Maybe not real fear, but just the feeling.
With a mask on, do you feel self-conscious? I do, sometimes. Like I’m this bank robber or something.
Can you tell if someone is smiling at you if you look at their face. I think most people want to smile, they want you to smile but we all know that no one can see the smile.
They eyes tell it all. A smile is universal…it has no language barriers. We always celebrate when a baby smiles for the first time: it’s a milestone and a way to connect even without words.

A smile is a reflection of your heart so go ahead and smile with me even though we’re wearing masks. Someday we won’t and we’ll all be smiling.

With so much focus on social distancing and avoiding coming into contact with the coronavirus, people are rushing out and clearing the shelves of vitamin C, Vitamin D, Zinc, medicinal mushrooms, Elderberry and the list goes on. What triggers set you in motion to eat beyond what your body needs?
Usually, it’s emotions that are the triggers and when we identify them, it’s easier to direct our energy in a different direction other than food.
Food, especially processed, and high sugar snacks tend to be the drug of choice when we are in emotional and sometimes even physical discomfort.
If you are in a place where you’re feeling many emotions but don’t want to turn to food for comfort, make a choice to not purchase the foods that don’t serve you. I know it’s hard, but that is the only way I have found to not turn to food for comfort. We don’t usually overeat celery, apples, broccoli, you know what I mean.
When you have strong emotions that you believe draw you toward food, take some time to quiet yourself and ask why. How will eating comfort or change things for you? What else could you do to get past the emotions and practice self-care?

It’s 3:00 pm and you’re feeling tired, maybe bored or unmotivated, or maybe you’re so busy and hungry so
you think you need some sugar to give you energy to power through until dinner.
Eating that candy bar or drinking an energy drink will actually make you feel more fatigued, create brain fog and make you irritable and less productive.
A better option is to start with water. Drinking 8-16 ounces of water will curb the hunger and the cravings and then having a high protein snack with a complex carb will energize you, enhance your mood and carry you to dinner time.
these are some options to snack on and keep your blood sugar in balance:
An apple and a piece of cheese
Greek yogurt and a spoon full of granola
Some berries and an ounce of nuts
Hard boiled egg and an orange

Remember, you always have a choice. Plan what you will eat, be prepared and remember you are worth it.

I found some interesting sugar facts...pick your poison!

One 20 oz. bottle of Coca Cola has 65 grams of sugar. This is the same amount of sugar in five Little Debbie Swiss Rolls.

A 15.2 oz. bottle of Minute Maid 100% Apple Juice contains 49 grams of sugar. This is about the same amount of sugar in 10 Oreos.

A 23 oz. bottle of Arizona Green Tea has about 51 grams of sugar, which is about the same as eating 20 Hershey’s Kisses.

A 16 oz. can of Monster Energy has 54 ounces of sugar, which is the same amount of sugar as 3.5 cups of Frosted Flakes.

A 32 oz. Gatorade bottle has 36 grams of sugar, which is like eating 5 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

Confessions of a Sugar Buster

When I decide to break up with sugar, it starts in my mind. I don’t usually consume much sugar, but at times I have let sugar creep into my daily diet and then realize I’m once again addicted and it has to go. I may see my weight creep up a pound or two but mostly it’s the way I feel that is the trigger. I don’t sleep well and I’m always waiting for my next “fix”.

So when I decide, I don’t let my feelings vote.

I clean out the junk food. There is no processed sugar in the house, candy and cookies are my downfall. I still eat fruit.

Stock the fridge with lots of veggies, fruits, and lean protein and nuts.

I plan to include how I’m feeling in my daily journaling.

I continue to exercise and plan my workouts.

My mindset is not of deprivations, but one of self-care. It’s not like I’ll never have another sweet treat again, but just not right now. I’m nourishing my body with healthy, living food that will keep me healthy and my immune system strong.

I’m a Successful Sugar Buster!!!

What are you doing for self-care? If you are staying home it’s so very important to take care of yourself so that you stay healthy. This includes all aspects of life, physical, emotional, and spiritual.

Prior to this illness going around, we had a few “sugar” events…Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Girl Scout Cookies! Oh my!

As the world became more informed as to what happened, I knew personally that I needed to cut out sugar because it compromises my immune system. I did just that and along with other lifestyle habits that support a healthy immune system like daily exercise, meditation, extra fruits and veggies and sleep I’ve stayed healthy even though I’m still working.

If you’re home and have sugar cravings but want to end the sugar addiction, it’s a GREAT time to do a 5 Day Sugar Cleanse!

I provide all your meals for 5 days (avoid grocery stores) as well as high-quality supplements and probiotics!

Is sugar really bad for you?

There are many forms of sugar and different forms affect the body in different ways. Sugars that are in fruits, vegetables, and grains are complex carbohydrates and are good for you. You need them, especially your brain needs them.

Simple sugars or processed sugar found in soda, candy cake, cookies and packaged food like Twinkies or Pop-Tarts cause havoc on your blood sugar and your immune system, especially in children. Consuming 75-100 grams of sugar (about 20 teaspoons) can suppress your body’s immune responses by causing a 50% drop in the ability of white blood cells to capture bacteria. In these times of everyone trying to boost their immune system, one of the best ways is to cut down on processed sugar.

A can of soda has 39 grams of sugar, Gatorade 34, most candy bars around 30 grams, some cereals have up to 40 grams and even yogurt can have added sugar. So it’s easy to see how quickly these sugars add up. The daily recommended amount of sugar is 25 grams (not including fruit and veggies).

The truth is that sugar is addicting, the more we have the more we want. The more we have the more we crave it. A high sugar meal or snack raises the blood glucose level, which triggers the outpouring of insulin. This excess insulin lingers in the system, triggering a craving for more sugar, thus adding another hill to the roller coaster ride.

So how do we stop the cravings? Sugar is often associated with expressions of love, so if we withhold sugar from ourselves and our children are we withholding love?

Is there a way to change our thinking regarding “sweet treats”?

I believe there is. I have kicked my sugar craving to the curb and no longer have them. I want to help as many people who want that, too. Stay with me and I’ll have more information on a Sugar Busters Cleanse coming up in April.

What’s in your grocery cart?
Are you stocking up on extra food along with your extra toilet paper?
It amazes me to see what people are buying as they get ready to stay home for the next few weeks. Yes, packaged food keeps for a long time but most of it is not healthy; loaded with sugar, fat, and salt. Processed sugar is the one thing that will compromise your immune system, yet when people are stress and in panic mode that seems to be the go-to “food”.
Most people, including many physicians, do not realize that at least 80% of your immune system and most of your serotonin for mental health is located in your gut. A healthy digestive system is imperative for optimal health. Have you grabbed a copy of my free ebook yet? If not, go to my website and get your copy of “Your Gut Matters”
