Day 38...

Meet April Lee- a true full circle story. As a young girl, April received services through Crittenton Center during one of the most vulnerable times in her life. Now, years later, she stands with us not only as a dedicated volunteer and community partner, but as a guiding light to other young professionals through the University of South Dakota who want to give back and learn more on how to help children. She is a powerful voice of lived experience and hope.

April shares her story with strength and heart, reminding us that healing is possible and that community matters. Her journey inspires the next generation of youth we serve, showing them that their story is far from over.

We are proud to call April both a success story and a cherished member of the Crittenton Center Family.

Day 36...

For board member Jeanie Hohenstein, supporting Crittenton Center runs deep- it's a legacy of compassion passed down from her parents. Jeanie shares how her mom and dad believed in caring for kids who needed it most, always finding ways to give, support, and show up. Their hearts for Crittenton's mission helped shape hers- and now, Jeanie carries that legacy forward through her service and leadership.

"I had the opportunity to become involved with the Crittenton Center as a board member and I didn't hesitate as years earlier my parents had donated gift cards to the youth at the shelter at Christmas for them to go shopping.

As donors, Leonard and Roberta Gill have alway been generous even before they had the capability. They had a strong faith in God. I watched them over the years grow their faith and generosity at the same time. Leonard was a successful entrepreneur. Starting his own paving company for roads while Bert was a homemaker. Leonard started with a wheelbarrow and a shovel. Eventually becoming a well known businessman in the Siouxland Area and past owner and operator of the LP Gill Landfill.

The couple would reminisce about their childhoods and difficult financial times and how they were on the receiving end of other people's generosity. Over the years Leonard was involved in many non-profits and board of directors, while Roberta was also serving the community and known to others as being there to help anyone in need.

The family continues to honor their legacy and support the Critten Center because of the support and services it offers to youth and families in need and the overall goal of improving their lives. - Jeanie Hohenstein"

Day 33...

Jeff Stanley isn't just our Board President- he's a true champion for Crittenton kids. Whether he's showing up at events, lending a helping hand behind the scenes, or leading with heart and vision, Jeff lives out our mission every day. His dedication reminds us that leadership isn't about titles- it's about showing up, again and again, for those who need us most.

"My name is Jeff Stanley and I currently serve as Board Chairman for the Crittenton Center. Although I have only served on the board for the past four years, I have supported and been involved with the agency since 2010 when I served as Chief Administrative/HR Officer for Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream, located in the Ice Cream Capital of the World. Crittenton Center was one of several Siouxland agencies that Wells actively supported, both financially and with volunteers, during my tenure.

My wife Kim and I have a passion for supporting children and family-based programs, which aligns perfectly with the mission of Crittenton Center. Kim served on the Crittenton Board for nine years and as Board President for two years, before retiring in 2021 from board activities. As an executive at Wells, the Crittenton Center addressed one of the greatest challenges facing our company, that being quality infant and pre-school care for the children of our employees. I was quite proud of the relationship forged between Wells and Crittenton Center in funding dedicated spaces for our employees at both the Sioux City and Le Mars Learning Centers.

One of my favorite agency stories focuses on the creation of Tiny Homes, a project that addresses young adult homelessness aging out of the foster care and homeless shelter system. Oftentimes, these young adults who have just turned 18 years old, are pushed out of the support system that they have relied upon for much of their lives with no safety net, no housing, and no job. Tiny Homes was envisioned to provide a bridge for these young adults to be housed while they make major life decisions - should I go to college, find a job, or build trade skills? I am very proud that Crittenton Center has created this unique offering that extends that safety net for these young adults and reduces the potential that these individuals find themselves out on the street with few opportunities for a bright future."

Thank you, Jeff, for being a steady presence and passionate voice for the children and families we serve. Our Story

Imagine the emotional state of these two siblings ages three and five…the police raided their home as their parents were in the process of doing co***ne, but before the police could apprehend the father, he quickly took the drugs. The children witnessed it all and were brought to us with just the clothes on their backs. We fed and bathed them, got them into warm, new socks, pajamas and tucked into a soft bed.

This is just one facet of what we do for area children and families. Please watch our video to see ALL that we do. Proudly serving Siouxland for over 120 years.
