A strong win for the Brave Heart Project unfolded in Cockle Bay Community as the SRHIN-SL recognized the dedication of its Community Mental Health Champions.

These champions worked closely with young people in the community, leading sessions that opened honest conversations about mental health, substance use, and healthy life choices. Their effort helped many young people gain knowledge, build confidence, and understand the risks linked to drug use.

The team presented Certificates to appreciate their service and handed over mobile tablets to support their continued work. The tablets will help them deliver the Brave Heart curriculum more effectively and reach even more young people in the community.

The Brave Heart Project reached a meaningful milestone with a successful certification ceremony that celebrated progress in school-based mental health and substance use prevention. The event brought together educators, government leaders, and partners to reflect on impact and renew commitment to young people’s well-being.

The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Hon. Conrad Sackey, attended as keynote and honorary guest. He applauded the success of the project, praised the dedication of participating teachers, and formally certified them. His remarks expressed strong confidence in the project’s future and its value to the national education system.

The impact of the Brave Heart sensitization continues to grow across schools in Freetown. Each engagement builds on the last, helping young people strengthen their understanding of mental health and the risks linked to substance use.

Through regular sensitization sessions, young people are gaining clear knowledge, learning how to make safe choices, and feeling more confident to speak up and support one another. These conversations are changing attitudes and encouraging healthier behaviors where they matter most.

This ongoing work demonstrates that sustainable education leads to tangible change. As the Brave Heart Project continues, we remain committed to reaching more young people, strengthening communities, and building a future where mental well-being and substance use prevention are a shared priority.

Young people spend a large part of their lives in school, and that makes schools a powerful place to shape healthy choices. Through the Brave Heart Project, we continue our mental health and substance use disorder campaign in schools across Freetown, reaching students with clear and honest information.

Each session opens space for learning, questions, and reflection. Students are gaining a better understanding of mental health, the risks of substance use, and the importance of making safe decisions early in life.

These conversations are already making a difference. More young people are speaking up, supporting one another, and choosing healthier paths. This is how lasting change begins.

The Brave Heart project team engaged the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education, Hon. Conrad Sackey, and his team to discuss the adoption of the Brave Heart Curriculum into the national school system.

The discussion focused on the need for long-term policy action that ensures substance use prevention and mental health education become a permanent part of the school curriculum.

By embedding substance use prevention education into the national curriculum, the Brave Heart Project supports a future where schools play a key role in protecting young people, strengthening their well-being, and building a healthier generation for Sierra Leone.

Last Friday, we convened our third Quarterly Technical Working Group (TWG) meeting, bringing together key partners who continue to guide and strengthen the Brave Heart Project. The engagement reaffirmed the vital role the TWG’s support has played in shaping the direction, quality, and reach of our work.

Through open discussion and technical guidance, members helped review our progress, identify emerging needs, and refine strategies for improving mental health literacy and substance use prevention in intervention communities. Their insights continue to enhance the project’s relevance, effectiveness, and responsiveness to the realities young people face.

The impact of this engagement is clear: stronger coordination, more evidence-driven decisions, and a shared commitment to creating safer, healthier school environments.

We are grateful for this continued collaboration and remain committed to advancing a unified response that protects and empowers young people across Sierra Leone

The Brave Heart Project is now in full swing, and trained teachers are leading weekly mental health and substance-use sessions with their students. For many young people, this is the first time they have a safe space to speak openly about stress, peer pressure, and the risks around them.

Teachers report real changes. Students are asking questions, supporting each other, and showing stronger decision-making. Some classes that were once silent are now actively talking about how to stay mentally strong and avoid harmful substances.

This is the true impact of the task-shifting model, building school-based support systems that work. When teachers are equipped, students gain confidence, healthier coping skills, and a clearer sense of direction.

The Brave Heart Project is not just teaching lessons; it is shaping mindsets and protecting futures. Every session is a step toward safer schools and healthier communities.

The Brave Heart Project has entered a new and exciting phase as trained teachers begin delivering the Task-Shifting Model to students in intervention schools.

These teachers are now sharing the knowledge and skills they gained, helping young people understand mental health, build resilience, and make informed choices about substance use. Each session creates a safe space for open conversation and learning, where students gain confidence to care for their well-being and support one another.

Through this model, the Brave Heart Project continues to empower schools to become hubs of awareness, compassion, and positive change for the next generation.
