Happy International Yoga Day!

This special day is celebrated around the world on 21st June every year to spread awareness about the positive effects of yoga. The theme this year is 'Yoga for Health - Yoga at Home'. Very appropriate as we find ourselves unable to practice in gyms or other group venues.

Whether you've been managing a bit of yoga every day (even 5 mins gentle movement in the morning counts!), or pencilling in a weekly time to practice, or even just doing the odd bit here and there, just know that every little counts.

Your mind, body and emotions will thank you for it. Namaste my friends. 🙏

Sunday morning movement. Found my old pois in the garage from about ten years ago, amazed I can still remember how to do it! Actually quite good for the arms and super therapeutic. 💜💖

Most of you already know that classes are postponed until further notice due to COVID-19. It's still sinking in and i'll miss teaching and my students, but it's just one of the ways we can all do our bit towards social distancing.

I don't know about you but I've been through a wide range of emotions this past week. Denial, guilt, sadness, compassion, overwhelmed, gratitude, conflicted, tired, wired, acceptance, and overwhelmed again!

If you've experienced any of those then let me reassure you it's totally normal, we're only human and we're in completely unchartered territory. Trying to navigate the health and wellbeing of ourselves, our immediate family, wider family and friends, the community, the country, and the world. This is deep stuff!

It's more important than ever before that we stay healthy, keep moving, and create opportunities for calmness. Here's a technique called 'Box Breathing' which can be helpful when your head is whizzing with thoughts and you just need to calm down a bit. It gives your mind something to focus on and can be a powerful stress reliever.

You can do it while sitting, lying down, walking, whenever, wherever. I usually do ten rounds (2 mins) or as many as you feel, no strain, no rush. It's very simple and focuses on all four corners of the breath. Give it a try and let me know how you get on...

It’s World Book Day! 📚

Reading can be a form of meditation in some ways, it takes you to a quiet place, away from screens and distractions, immersing you in a new world or topic, letting the worries of the day slip away.

Here’s a few of the books I have on the go at the moment. I’m also listening to a couple of audiobooks too. Note to self... start a book > finish that book > start next book. ☺️

Look at that gorgeous blue sky! This was only a couple of days ago, post stretching class on holiday in Lanzarote. Seems that I missed a couple of big storms in the UK, hope everyone is alright. I’m back to teaching classes again today and we’ll be focussing on sun salutations to bring a bit of sunshine into our lives with movement and visualisation. ☀️

01/02/2020

Yoga is not just physical postures, it takes many forms off the mat too. Anything that helps to bring balance and calm, including creative expression like sketching and painting. ✏️🎨

And the good news from artist Lachlan Goudie, you don’t have to be Michelangelo to get the benefits! “... it’s like mind yoga, you’re engaged in a simple activity - looking, observing, slowing your heart rate down.”

I might check out Life Drawing Live on BBC4 this week to get inspired. ✨

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Yes I realise I'm a bit late to the party here but I decided to practice what I preach and take a proper good break over crimbo to reset and recharge. It worked wonders!

So here we are, 2020... We're not just into a new year, we're into a whole new decade. Resolutions or not, it's the perfect time for a fresh start and new beginnings. Let's kick start our health and wellbeing routines, let's think about what we want to achieve this year, and most importantly let's focus on gratitude and the happy times ahead.

Yoga can help with all of the above by uniting the mind, body and soul, so that every part of you is focussed and heading in the same direction. Here's a quick reminder of my classes and when they start up again.

TUESDAYS 7.00-8.15pm, Westfield Junior School, Yeadon (start on 14th next week)

WEDNESDAYS 6.00-7.00pm, Nuffield Gym, Guiseley (start on 8th this week, members only)

FRIDAYS 10.00-11.15am, Tranfield Gardens, Guiseley (start on 17th next week)

Places are limited so let me know if you'd like to book. Look forward to seeing you on the mat!

Aaaaaand... RELAX 🎅🏻

There’s no denying that December is an extra busy time of year. We have our day-to-day responsibilities, chores and life-admin. Plus all the sparkling festivities, gift buying, xmas grocery list, socialising, eating, drinking, getting the house ‘perfect’ for visitors etc.

And what if on top of that you get ill, have crazy end of year deadlines, or a challenging situation to deal with. It’s enough to send you running for the snowy hills!

Well hopefully you have a bit of time off, but whatever you’re up to over the next few weeks, make sure you get some rest, slow the pace down, enjoy the moment... RELAX 🎅🏻

I’ve officially broken up now so I’ll wish you all a very merry crimbo! And a big thanks to everyone who attended my classes this month, I hope it helped. 🙏🏻

“Life-sized model shows what office workers might look like in 20 years - a permanently hunched back, varicose veins, red eyes and a protruding stomach.”

Oh yikes, this is quite shocking! Even if it’s exaggerated it helps to highlight how sedentary lifestyles and poor postural habits can affect our bodies. Note to self, sit up straight, move around regularly, take eyes away from screen, do more yoga! 🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️

The life-sized doll named Emma has a permanently hunched back, varicose veins, red eyes and a protruding stomach.

It's today. 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year, including issues with anxiety, depression, phobias and OCD. We live in such a busy, fast-paced, digital, high-flying, demanding world, no wonder we get strung out and develop issues.

I recently asked my students for some class feedback, and as well as the obvious physical benefits, all of them mentioned at least one of the following reasons for attending yoga: relax, slow down, de-stress, feel more positive, enjoy me-time, feel calm.

A lot of us (including me) have a tendency to dwell on the past, feel anxious in the present, and worry about the future. Yes yoga gives you a good stretch, but it also gives you useful tools, a supportive environment and increased awareness of your overall health and wellbeing. So let's remember, it's okay not to be okay, just take one positive step at a time.

Still feeling refreshed after attending a wonderful yoga retreat in the Lake District at the weekend. So nice to get away and spend some quality time with my mum, and a whole bunch of lovely people!

We did loads of yummy yoga, enjoyed a long luscious walk and ate fabulous food. It’s amazing how a few days away can really help you reset and recharge. And if you set the intention to hold onto that feeling, you have the power to make it last too. ✨😌✨

"Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible." - Dalai Lama

I love this quote. It's such a simple but powerful reminder that our busy schedules, digital distractions and challenging times shouldn't get in the way of being kind to one another.

Kindness doesn't need to be time-consuming or added to the to-do list, it's just about keeping it front of mind. Perhaps smile at your neighbour, compliment your co-worker, listen to your family and just be there for them.

Make sure you're kind to yourself too, you can't give from an empty cup. Take some me-time to settle your mind, listen to what your body needs, nourish your soul, and always talk kindly to yourself, you ARE worth it!

We're exploring postures like Charity / Parsvottanasana this month to expand the heart space, bringing qualities of kindness and compassion into our lives. 🤗

Full moon over High Royds clock tower last night. The first full moon on Friday 13th in over 20 years. Spooky or magical? 🌕

Whether you follow the lunar cycles or not, there’s something pretty cool about seeing a full moon up in the night sky. Mesmerising, mysterious, calming... bathing the land with its soft light.

Let it wash away any old habits, negative thoughts and unhelpful situations. This particular full moon marks a changing in the seasons so it’s a perfect time to let go. ✨

Had a rare Friday off from teaching yoga today. So what did I do with my morning? Hike up a hill and do some yoga of course! 🤸‍♀️

Stunning views, vitamin d and fresh air, happy days. Decided to keep my trainers on to avoid the sheep poo. 🐑🌳

Lazy Sunday baking... This homemade flapjack deserves an extreme close up, packed with organic oats, and laced with coconut sugar and orange soaked dates. Amazing!

I can’t take the credit though, the recipe is from Dru Worldwide ‘Cooking with Love by Keith Squires’. It’s a winner every time and perfect with a cuppa 😋

Happy International Yoga Day! 🙏

Celebrating all that is wonderful about yoga. It's not just a physical practice, it's so much more than that. Unifying mind, body and emotions, creating a sense of wholeness and balance.

In a way it's about getting out of your head and into the present moment. Bringing awareness to your body, connecting with your breath, repeating a simple affirmation, or just enjoying nature... How will you practice being present today?

It's been a busy few months planning my wedding, so apologies I've been off the radar a bit... Here’s me and my fellow yogis striking a quick pose on the big day! 👰🙏

Yoga definitely helped to keep me balanced during the preparations and never ending to do list. And of course, I made time to practice yoga on the morning of my wedding, it kept me calm and positive from beginning to end. The power of putting yourself in the right frame of mind at the start of any day is truly undeniable.

So I'm now officially a Mrs and looking forward to the rest of year. Watch this space for class updates and inspiration. ✨
