The thing about aging that hurts is finally knowing who you are and then looking in the mirror one day and not seeing the you you know. It's not vanity. It's the fear of losing yourself. The fear and reality that time has a stake in your bets. ~GWA

Writing Comedy:
Emily Hampshire, who played Stevie on Schitt’s Creek, was talking on a podcast about her past eating disorder, and how she gained a lot of weight (out of depression from trying to remain thin) in a later season of an earlier show she acted in. They wrote her weight gain into the show. She played an actress and had to perform a scene where she was talked about how she “couldn’t stay away from the crafty table" and had her hoarding food on camera, under the crafty table, and had her do other embarrassing things.

She was humiliated. But also, she said, "It made me learn comedy, in a really hard lesson way.”

She touched on something so wise there. She touched on how harsh comedy is. How you have to become comfortable making fun of yourself and pie-ing yourself in the face. That's what comedy is. Taking the real life, the dark, and shining a light on it.
Exposing yourself in order to relate to others. Getting embarrassingly comfortable with ones biggest fears, all in the pursuit of finding relief in the connection we build with our audience by sharing our plight. Only we do it through writing. If you aren't using yourself as your biggest writing tool, you have a pandora's box sitting right under your desk.

But please don't do what those writers did. Use yourself, and only when you've conquered a healthy mindspace to do so.

Every character has an arc and is going through a journey. In every ensemble scene, you have to include that. Even what's happening mentally with the characters can be shown subtlety in the description of their action within the scene, even if they aren't the main focus of that scene.

Everyone has their own plot going on. And the puzzle is finding the common denominator that links all of these characters, aside from their place of work or life circumstance... How do their arcs collide?

Another film to prove Apatow knows what he's doing.
I'm really liking his profile-like approach to characters/comedians, and using what's authenticity there to find very rich and true comedy. I also love that he's encouraging comedians to write narratives, produce, create and take control. Pretty cool. He proves time and again that the best artists are the collaborative artists. That this is what we're doing when we make films. We're sharing life.

It’s not only the dialogue you cater to… You cater to the emotions of the very real characters, who they are, what they come in the door with, their pasts and present. When you shoot a scene, it should always be the moments without dialogue that speak the loudest. As a writer, your biggest task is to make room for the moments your words prepare the human wild for. Everything we neglect inside of ourselves, in what we say, ignites the flame that is in the action in what we do.
