I believe strongly in the evidence-based functional medicine approach, which looks at the body as a system and focuses on the underlying root cause of disease and dysfunction. I work with clients one on one to create a customized nutrition and lifestyle plan unique to your individual needs. I truly believe that

👉 Shop local as much as possible so that you can get to know your farmers. The farmers market is my favorite place to shop. You can also look for local CSA’s or even better, grow your own food!

This is a hard but honest truth. If you want to actually heal from a chronic health issue then you have to get to the root cause rather than play whack-a-mole chasing symptoms.

The root cause usually goes back to diet, hydration, lifestyle, circadian biology, toxins, stress, or emotional trauma.

Start with nourishing food, proper hydration, physical activity/exercise, mineral balance, adequate sleep, earthing/grounding, balancing your circadian rhythm, and regulating your nervous system. You’d be surprised how much of an impact nutrition and lifestyle changes can make. Focus on this first.

Once you have that dialed in, if you still have symptoms then move on to gut health protocols, detoxing, supplements, etc.

Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 (GLP-1), is a hormone that is getting a lot of attention for its role in glucose metabolism and appetite regulation. You’ve likely heard all of the buzz on these pharmaceutical injectables, such as Ozempic, and may even know someone who’s taking one.
 
What if I told you that the gut microbiome may influence GLP-1 secretion and you can increase GLP-1 naturally by supporting your gut health. As you know, I’m always looking for the root cause – for the “why”, instead of the band-aid approach.
 
Why are people low in GLP-1? It likely starts in the gut. Dysbiosis, or an imbalance in the gut microbiome, has been associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and inflammation—conditions often linked to impaired GLP-1 signaling.
 
GLP-1 is a hormone primarily secreted by L-cells in the distal small intestine and colon in response to nutrient ingestion. It plays a crucial role in glucose homeostasis by enhancing insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells, inhibiting glucagon release, and delaying gastric emptying. GLP-1 also exerts effects on the central nervous system, particularly in the hypothalamus, to regulate appetite and satiety.
 
SCFAs, such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate, are produced through microbial fermentation of dietary fibers and have been shown to regulate gut hormone release, including GLP-1.
This makes a diverse and balanced microbiome essential for optimal GLP-1 function.
 
Additionally, specific bacterial species have been linked to enhanced GLP-1 secretion. Bifidobacteria,  Akkermansia muciniphila, and Clostridium butyricum are associated with a healthy gut microbiome and have been shown to increase GLP-1 levels in both animal models and human studies. These bacteria may modulate GLP-1 through their production of SCFAs and other bioactive compounds that interact with L-cells in the gut.
 
The best way to determine if you are low in SCFA’s or these beneficial bacteria is through a gut microbiome test. Gluten free food that comes in a package or a box is not only still processed, but likely also contains high levels of glyphosate and pesticides.

Moms Across America has tested 46 samples of gluten-free foods, including bread, pasta, crackers, snacks, flour, dessert mixes, and chips for glyphosate/AMPA, 236 pesticides, minerals, and gluten.

Results of glyphosate and pesticides:
44 out of 46 of the samples came back positive for glyphosate.
Out of the 237 pesticides we tested for, glyphosate was the most prevalent.
Not all of the gluten-free products that were also organic were the lowest in glyphosate.
21% of the samples were positive for glyphosate at levels higher than 10 ppb, the EU threshold for acceptable glyphosate residues.
According to Don Huber, Purdue University Emeritus and plant pathologist of 60 years, exposure to .1 ppb of glyphosate is harmful and should be avoided. 95.6% of the samples contained higher than .1 ppb pf glyphosate.

Moms Across America has tested 46 samples of gluten-free foods, including bread, pasta, crackers, snacks, flour, dessert mixes, and chips for glyphosate/AMPA, 236 pesticides, minerals, and gluten. The results are disturbing and affect at least 20 million people who eat gluten-free food in America.
