BAYLOR UNIVERSITY PUBLISHES LARGEST STUDY EVER ON MASSAGE THERAPY USE

July 2024

"Many people receive massage therapy and for many reasons. But according to a new study – the largest and most comprehensive ever conducted on the subject – the prevalence of visits to massage therapists is higher than one might have imagined and the reasons may be surprising."

“What our study shows is that it’s probably not helpful any longer to label massage as an ‘alternative’ therapy, with all of the marginality that the term conveys.”

“Licensed massage therapists ought to be respected as mainstream practitioners, whose profession provides a therapeutic approach not just to address pain and functional challenges but to foster wellness and overall well-being, physical and emotional.

Everyone can benefit from working with a skilled massage therapist. They’re the hidden gems in the healthcare system.” - Jeff Levin, Ph.D., M.P.H., University Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health. (Robert Rogers/Baylor University)

The Biceps Pulley 💡

👉 The biceps pulley or “sling” is a capsuloligamentous complex that acts to stabilize the long head of the biceps tendon in the bicipital groove. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21571657/

👉 The pulley is an essential part of the rotator interval and consists of a sling formed in part by the superior glenohumeral ligament and coracohumeral ligaments, whose fibers blend together at the entrance of the bicipital groove, as well as the distal attachment of the subscapularis tendon (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32609587/) (Fig).

👉 The rotator cuff provides additional reinforcement to the pulley, with fiber bundles from the transverse band forming the roof of the rotator interval capsule along with the coracohumeral and superior glenohumeral ligaments. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26789600/)
Supraspinatus fibers reinforce the posterior aspect of the pulley roof, and the floor of the system is derived from posterior subscapularis fibers (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32609587/).

👉 The superior glenohumeral ligament (SGHL) stabilizes against anterior shear forces proximal to the bicipital groove, and the pulley provides stabilization and maintains appropriate position of the long head of the biceps. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26789600/)

Like a telephone cable, the ulnar nerve passes through a protective tunnel behind the elbow’s medial epicondyle, or funny bone, forming what is called the cubital tunnel.
When the ulnar nerve is compressed or entrapped, the nerve can tear and become inflamed leading to a variety of symptoms, called Cubital Tunnel Syndrome.

I’ve discovered about eight ulnar nerve entrapment sites beginning in the neck, extending through the thoracic outlet, armpit, and down into the hand.

All those entrapment sites are addressed in my Treating Trapped Nerves MAT Course which is 25% OFF this week ONLY.

Technique Tuesday: When the Funny Bone Ain’t Funny
Mobilizing the Ulnar Nerve

The ulnar is the most exposed of all nerves and ranks second only to the median nerve (carpal tunnel syndrome) as an arm and hand pain generator. Irritation of the ulnar nerve can present as tingling, pain and numbness in the pinky and ring fingers sometimes in a shocking way as the flexed elbow strikes an object compressing it against bone.

Like a telephone cable, the ulnar nerve passes through a protective tunnel behind the elbow’s medial epicondyle or funny bone forming what is called the ‘cubital tunnel’.

All those entrapment sites are addressed in my “Treating Trapped Nerves” home-study course, and some examples are presented below. You’ll love how easily these routines integrate into your existing massage and bodywork practice, and your clients will be amazed at how quickly they are free of nagging pinched nerve pain emanating from the neck, thoracic outlet, and cubital tunnel.

To release ulnar entrapment under the subscapularis muscle, therapist’s left hand grasps client’s wrist and abducts arm, while soft flat fingers of therapist’s right hand contact… Click here to read more and view an ulnar nerve mobilization technique video: https://mailchi.mp/freedomfrompain/when-the-funny-bone-aint-funny-159666

To all my DESK JOCKEYS & OVERHEAD RACKET ATHLETES... 👋

Are you feeling neck and thoracic spine stiffness??

This probably means you have a protracted shoulder girdle that's causing a HIGHLY ACTIVATED LEVATOR SCAPULA and UPPER TRAPEZIUS. 😀

☝️ One way to test for this condition:
Floor Angel (Image 2)- lying down, place your arms out (externally rotated) and elbows at 90 degrees. Slowly extend the arms above your head. If you're experiencing pain in the shoulder socket and/or tightness in your pecs, then that's a YES.

💥 Best way to get rid of the condition:
Make an appointment with a MAT Therapist, let them assess and treat you with a really wonderful GRADED EXPOSURE STRETCHING for Pec Minor!

Want to find an MMT or a MAT-Certified therapist near you?
We got a DIRECTORY for that! 👇
