Wow! A year. I can't believe that it has been a year since my last post.
Between medical issues, work and life, in general, my sleep has been HORRIBLE.
Hopefully, yours has been better. If not, let's talk about it.

Did you know that most instances of self diagnosed insomnia is not really insomnia, but some other form of sleep disorder.

Take the time to speak to a medical professional if you experience the following:
Daytime sleepiness
Fatigue
Interrupted sleep
Snoring
Nocturnal leg cramps or pain
Morning Headaches
Difficulty initiating &/or maintaining sleep

Wondering what I've been up to all this time? This guy right here has been my focus. He's on the road to recovery now, but I found out (as I was taking the pic) that he snores on occasion. Snoring is not normal (at any age) and is a sign that your breathing is being compromised.
Reasons for snoring could simply be allergies, but sleep apnea could also be the culprit. Play it safe and consult a doctor.

My sleep deprivation selfie. Taking care of my son while he is sick has had me up around the clock for the past 3 days. I'm sure many of you can relate. I'm making sure to drink plenty of water, take my vitamins & sleep every chance I get. We have to take care of ourselves in order to take care of others. I'll be back soon with more sleep education for the masses. In the meantime, sweet dreams everyone.

Sleep apnea actually can consist of 2 types of problems.

Apnea-when you stop breathing for 10 seconds or more at a time.

Hypopnea-shallowing breathing that causes your oxygen levels to fall by at least 4%.

Looking for alternative treatments for obstructive sleep apnea? There are a few surgeries you can consider.

UPPP-removing soft tissue from the back of your throat.

Genioglossus Advancement-tightening up the tendons in the tongue to keep it from falling backwards and closing off your airway.

Hyoid Suspension-moving the hyoid bone (aka adam's apple in guys) closer to the front of your throat which tightens the tongue muscles further.

Tonsillectomy-getting rid of those pesky tonsils.

Consult an ENT for an evaluation and see if you are a candidate for any of these surgeries.

There's an implant to treat sleep apnea?! If your willing get some electrodes implanted in your neck this device will stimulate the soft tissue in your neck (in order for it to stay fairly rigid) to reduce or eliminate sleep apnea.

I remember a time when kids were lined up at the school nurses office to get their daily doses of ADD/ADHD meds. Untreated or undiagnosed sleep apnea can mimic the symptoms of other diseases and disorders.

People always ask me how old do you have to be to get sleep apnea. My answer; newborn to ninety. That's only because I have never had anyone that was 100 years old in the sleep lab. If little kids can wear CPAP, I think anyone at any age can try.

Ready to get evaluated by a doctor but not sure what to expect. The doctor will evaluate your medications, lifestyle, diseases and disorders and daytime sleepiness. The doctor may also do a STOP BANG evaluation. So what is a STOP BANG? So glad you asked.
S-Do you snore?
T-Are you tired during the day?
O-Has anyone observed you not breathing in your sleep?
P-Do you have high blood pressure?

B-What is your BMI (calculated in the doctor's office).
A-What is your age?
N-What is your neck circumference? (taken in doctor's office).
G-What is your gender (male or female)?

The answers to these questions will help the doctor assess your risk for having a sleep disorder called sleep apnea. This will also help the doctor determine if you need to have a sleep study.

Have you heard it's bad to use electronics right before bed? Well it's true. The blue light from phones, TV, tablets, etc mimic sunlight and reduce the melatonin in your brain. Melatonin is one of the hormones that triggers sleep. So try to stay away from the blue light b***y traps at least one hour before bed.
