In June, we held two more workshops at our school. First, the students read the story "Mira, Mira – Putting on Weight." It tells the story of a teenage girl who is overweight, which affects her self-confidence and causes her to withdraw from others. Her classmates make fun of her, and in her distress, she begins to harm herself physically. When the teachers notice her struggles, they refer her to the school psychologist. Eventually, Mira joins a camp for children facing similar challenges, where she finds new friends and regains her self-confidence.
Together with the students, we discussed the story — what they thought about it, how they would offer support, and where they would turn for help in a time of crisis.
The next workshop focused on creatively expressing the story. The students made a collage showing what Mira was like before and after her experience. To conclude, each student wrote on a post-it note what helps them feel calm, what gives them a sense of safety, and what they wish for when they are in distress.
