Join me for a MOVE YOUR DNA ADVENTURE next Weekend!
21-22 September, Canterbury, UK

This is Move No 15: Lunge

The lunge is one of my favourite of the 40 moves we teach, because participants really start to feel parts of their hips that never normally move! Parts vital for walking efficiently, for ease of movement and pelvic health.

This lunge looks easy, but because we focus not just on stretching the hips, but stabilizing the pelvis and spine —which can compensate for tight hips— this lunge ends up feeling pretty challenging.

This is what a Move Your DNA weekend is all about; finding parts in your body that are sedentary, stiff or weak and learning how to move and care for them.

This coming weekend we will be at the beautiful Manor Barn studio in Canterbury near Larkey Valley Woods and it is due to be warm and, fingers-crossed, dry.

I am teaching a Move Your DNA Weekend in September at the lovely Manor Barn Studio in Canterbury.

This is a two-day movement experience based on Katy Bowman's book "Move Your DNA: Restore Your Health Through Natural Movement". We will work through all the exercises in the book designed to restore movement and strength to the most sedentary and stiff parts of the body. We will also spend some time exploring natural movements such as squatting and walking in the beautiful Larkey Valley Wood.

Booking info in the bio.

I am now co-host on the Move Your DNA podcast which is such an honour and a pleasure.
On our latest episode we talked all about hiking poles and turned over every stone. PLEASE SUBSCRIBE OR FOLLOW to hear the episodes as they come out.

To Hiking pole, or not to hiking pole, is the question that biomechanist Katy Bowman and biologist Jeannette Loram address in this episode. The use of poles has become a hotly debated topic among hikers…

In 10 days time I am holding a Move Your DNA weekend in Helensburgh, Scotland! These workshops are organized by and taught by certified teachers. We work from feet, through hips to shoulders figuring out where the 'sticky' or weaker spots are in your body and how to adjust all the exercises to your need. For booking follow the link in my bio or go to my events.

There are still a couple of spots left in the workshop and if you are in Scotland or north England this one is for you. We will have two full days of movement with outdoor walks in nearby woods and parks and there will be time to relax too! Scotland is at its most glorious in May.

"In Search of Snow"

I am always looking for ways to get my kids moving and outdoors rather than in front of a screen. I fail plenty, but one of my most successful strategies involves a 'rule' and that rule is actually not for them but for me:

If the kids ask me to go and do something outside with them, I say yes!

[There are some valid reasons that I don't always follow this rule- I now refuse to play rugby ever since being almost concussed by kid #1 ]

What this rule has done over the years has encouraged more movement for all the family, but also more movement variety. I lack imagination, but the kids have endless ideas and it helps me get over my own inertia and resistance to challenging or new things.

My rule sometimes means I have to jump off rocks into freezing bodies of water or finds me totally out of my comfort zone climbing up a cliff. Invariably though I am always happy to have done it.

Another unintentional, but positive, result of my rule, has been to make my life easier when my husband is overseas as he is right now. The dogs need to get out, I need to get out and although the kids might not realise it, they do too. It is much easier if we can all willingly go outside together. Full disclosure this does not always happen, but following their suggestions definitely makes for smoother family relations and simpler logistics.

This past weekend my youngest kid demanded that we take a trip to find snow & ice. We adventured both days; made snowmen, climbed snow dusted hills, and excavated ice from ponds. It was magical and very festive.

An extra bonus was that everyone was exhausted and mellow by Sunday afternoon- dog #1 slept on top of dog #2 for the rest of the day and neither even stirred when a box of ripe cheese was opened.

Revive Your Spine!

I am holding my last workshop of the year on 9th December in Helensburgh: 10.30 am to 2.30 pm.

We will be exploring gentle backbends to mobilise stiffer parts of your spine and hips. You will learn how to use your core muscles to support your low back and in this way develop strength and mobility at the same time.

Anyone feeling tense in the run up to the holidays, this one is for you!

Back Bends - unwind your spine from the hunched computer slump and ‘tech neck’ that most of us inadvertently develop over time in front of our screens. December 9th 10.30 am to 2.30 pm at Oak Tree Gallery, Helensburgh

It is back to School for the kids next week and it is also back to group classes for me. I am definitely ready for both!

Monday Classes start on the 14th: 9.30 am and 10.45 am
Saturday Class starts on the 19th: 9am

My weekly in-person classes are ideal for those who enjoy an explorative, educational approach to movement & yoga. Classes are varied and taught either around particular parts of the body such as shoulders, spine and hips or around specific themes such as: balance, walking or breathing. Classes are small, friendly and questions are always encouraged.
