✨Did you know?✨
In 2023–2024, falls cause 43% of all injury hospitalisations in Australia - across all age groups.
🏠 Minor Home Modifications like grab rails, specialty task lighting, and non-slip flooring can make a big difference.
But that’s not all, there are many other practical solutions such as lever taps, handheld showers, stair railings, threshold ramps, and bathroom safety upgrades.
These small changes can reduce falls by up to 30%, helping you stay safe and independent at home.
Our Occupational Therapists assess, prescribe, and recommend modifications tailored to your needs.
Three clients. Three completely customised Smartbox GridPads. 🌟
At LifeTec, our Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) service helps individuals communicate in the way that works best for them—whether that’s symbols, text, or early learning setups for children.
Each Smartbox AAC GridPad is personalised to a person’s needs, goals, and daily life, supporting them to express themselves, build confidence, and connect with others.
💬 No matter the age or ability, our AAC service can help you or your client find the right way to communicate.
Did you know that around 30% of assistive technology gets abandoned when the wrong item is chosen or when there’s not enough support after it arrives?
That’s why an Assistive Technology (AT) assessment is so important.
It’s a chance for a health professional to understand your needs, preferences, and goals — and explore which solutions will actually work for your daily life.
At LifeTec, we help you choose, trial, and learn the assistive tech that truly supports your independence, not adds frustration.
Finding the right Assistive Technology doesn’t have to be overwhelming. At LifeTec, our health professionals are here to support you through the entire journey — from assessment and funding to setup and training.
Whether you’re an NDIS participant, carer, or health professional, we’re here to help you make life safer, easier, and more independent.
Everyone’s needs are different — and so is the right assistive technology.
LifeTec helps you explore, trial, and access AT that supports your independence and lifestyle.

✨ Our speechie Bryan is showing how we can tailor Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) trials for adult clients using high-tech solutions that can align with their needs!
1. Symbol-based gridsets like VocoChat are great for quick common phrases, functional communication and help reduce fatigue during conversations.
2. Keyboard-based layouts such as AEIOU are ideal for composing new messages, and supporting more independent communication over time.
For clients with fine motor challenges, we can adjust touchscreen settings such as touch-and-hold activation or visual pop-up guides to make selections easier and more accurate.
💬 Every AAC setup is unique, and we love helping clients find what works best for them.
✨ Make daily life easier with Assistive Technology!
From simple aids to advanced devices, our skilled health professionals are here to help you or your clients to live safely and independently.

We recently welcomed Speech Pathologists from Far North Queensland for a Professional Development session focused on high-tech AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).
As two of the few SLPs providing speech therapy across Cooktown and Thursday Island, they play a vital role in supporting communication access in remote communities.
At LifeTec, our Speech Pathologist is skilled in providing mentoring, training, and hands-on learning experiences to help professionals build confidence in prescribing and supporting AAC.
If your team is looking to strengthen your knowledge in communication technology and assistive solutions, we’d love to support your next learning session.
We’re celebrating by answering some of the most common questions about AAC, from what it is, to how the assessment works, and how we help find the right communication tools for every individual.
Everyone deserves a voice and AAC helps make that possible!

LifeTec is a social enterprise that provides dedicated assistive technology (AT) services. Our aim is to enable people of all ages and abilities to actively engage in home, work, school and community life.
We are experts in recommending the correct use of assistive technology, displaying hundreds of helpful items in our Ambient Living Display Centres, and we have an extensive online database of many more. Our qualified health professionals will give you impartial advice so that you can make informed decisions about what is best for you.
Established in 1981 as The Independent Living Centre by Louise van Willigen, LifeTec has been providing specialist advice and information to help people make their lives easier through assistive technology.
Louise was an astute, energetic, and visionary leader. On its opening, the Independent Living Centre was a modest one-room display staffed only by Louise herself in a humble demountable unit on the grounds of the Greenslopes Hospital.
In 2004, Louise passed and left a dynamic and diverse organisation which provides information and advice on assistive technology to thousands of Queenslanders across the state. She welcomed visitors to a display of over 1000m2 and visited places as remote as Saibai Island and as close as Woolloongabba.
Louise encouraged innovation, creative thinking, and respect for every individual. Those of us fortunate to have worked with Louise will remember her warmth, sharp intelligence, soft-spoken and almost aristocratic manner, as well as her wicked sense of humour.
