Marine biologists who study sharks often rely on scuba gear and oxygen tanks to stay underwater for long periods of time. But that ability doesn’t come overnight—it takes training, practice, and strong control of breathing.

At the Breathing Center of Houston, our patients also go through a process of building endurance and learning how to use oxygen more efficiently. The goal? To breathe better, live stronger, and rely less on supplemental oxygen—just like David Nelson, who shared:

“I’m feeling hopeful thanks to the Breathing Center of Houston because the therapist’s patience and attention to my breathing issues have allowed me to no longer need to rely on oxygen equipment to maintain a good oxygen level. When I first went to the Breathing Center of Houston, I was unable to walk for 5 minutes. I am now able to walk for 15 minutes and maintain good oxygen levels. I would like to add that observing attention, care, and genuine concern of the therapists to a wide variety of clients is truly awe-inspiring. They are top-notch, providing a great healing environment.”

Whether you’re diving deep or walking farther, oxygen training makes all the difference.

Breathe strong. Train smart.

Shark Week brings attention to one of the most common fears: sharks. Known as galeophobia, this fear often isn’t just about the animals themselves — it’s about feeling vulnerable or out of control.

That same kind of fear is something many people with chronic lung disease experience daily. Anxiety, depression, and uncertainty about breathing or flare-ups can make everyday life feel overwhelming.

The good news? Both fears are real, but treatable.

Just like people manage shark fears through education, therapy, and calming techniques, those living with lung disease can find relief through pulmonary rehab, mental health support, and breathing strategies that restore a sense of control.

Fear is common — but so is resilience. You’re not alone, and help is available. Let’s face fear together, one breath at a time. 🦈 🫁 🧠 💪

Did you know whale sharks have massive gill surface areas—up to 1,000 square feet—to help them breathe efficiently underwater?

That’s their version of lung power. For humans, lung efficiency isn’t about size—it’s about function.

At the Breathing Center of Houston, we help people with chronic lung disease train their lungs to work smarter, not harder, through customized pulmonary rehab programs.

Whether you’re a 20-ton shark or just trying to get up the stairs without losing your breath, every breath counts.

DID YOU KNOW? 🫁 🦈

Most sharks have to keep moving to survive — it’s how they push water over their gills to breathe. If they stop, they can’t get the oxygen they need.

Humans don’t have gills, but for those with chronic lung disease, movement is just as important.

Pulmonary rehab helps keep your lungs working, improves oxygen flow, and makes breathing easier one step at a time.

Keep moving. Keep breathing.

Meet Nancy Vesey.

Last year, Nancy was in and out of the emergency room—six times. Three of those visits turned into hospital stays.

She was struggling to breathe and battling advanced COPD. Her quality of life had taken a serious hit.

But then her doctor recommended pulmonary rehab at the Breathing Center of Houston.

“I noticed a difference within a few weeks,” Nancy says. Now, six months later?
“I notice a BIG, BIG difference.”

No ER visits this year. No hospitalizations.
And most importantly, Nancy feels like herself again.

Hope is breathing easier. 🫁

PATIENT SPOTLIGHT: Milton Long
"The more I exercise, the better and freer I feel."

Milton came to the Breathing Center of Houston looking to improve his breathing and stamina — and he did just that.

After his first round of treatment, he was able to go on vacation to Missouri and enjoy activities he hadn’t been able to do before.

“The Breathing Center has given me more stamina and really helped me with my breathing... I also appreciate the community and meeting others with the same conditions.”

We’re proud of Milton and the progress he’s made.

B*H Story

The Breathing Center of Houston is a family owned business founded in 2008. Having seen first-hand the effects COPD has on loved ones, our family decided to start a business dedicated to providing the best Pulmonary Therapy and Rehab services in the state. Our once small family business has seen tremendous growth over the past 10 years as we have worked directly with pulmonologists in the Houston area to help treat cases of Chronic Lung Disease. The Breathing Center of Houston now has 4 locations: Meyerland Plaza, The Woodlands, and Katy, and Clear Lake.
