Today is World Plant Power Day! It is celebrated every 7th March to raise awareness about the benefits of eating plant-based foods.
Whilst it is not for everyone to become fully vegan, and I actually think some people are healthier for eating some meat, it is certainly very beneficial for our health in many ways to include more plant-based foods – fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, nuts, seeds, lentils, beans, tofu, miso, plant-based milks. Certainly, in the Naturopathic Herbal Clinic I advocate these foods and include them in my Treatment Diet Plans to help heal a lot of health issues, as well as prescribing herbal remedies. Get in touch via Messenger if you are interested in having a consultation with me.

HERB OF THE MONTH: BLACK COHOSH

One of my favourite herbs and one I happen to take often – as I’m a woman of a certain age 😊 – is Black Cohosh, aka Cimicifuga Racemosa. Although Black Cohosh is more renowned as a useful remedy for menopause, it is also helpful for reproductive health as well as it helps regulate the menstrual cycle, relieves PMS symptoms, cramps, breast pain, heavy bleeding, to name just a few. Black cohosh has sedative qualities so is useful if you suffer from insomnia, depression, palpitations or anxiety for example. It is also hugely anti-inflammatory and is an anodyne, which means painkilling, so is useful in arthritis, back pain, headaches, nerve or muscle pain. It can normalise heart function as it dilates blood vessels and thereby lowers blood pressure. Herbalists all use herbs differently, but I like to use this herb where a person has a need for regulating their hormones but also one or two of the other aforementioned symptoms. I find it hugely beneficial.

HERB OF THE MONTH – MARSHMALLOW (ALTHAEA OFFICINALIS)

My marshmallow is in full bloom at the moment and is a sight to behold - it is 6 feet tall! When I used to grow it in a pot, it used to grow to only around 3 feet. I put it in the ground and whooooaaa it took off! I love Marshmallow. It is my number one go-to herb for digestive issues and maintaining gut health. Good gut health is at the root of good overall health. It is a cooling herb which means it can help heal the heat of inflammation and irritation within the body with an affinity with the digestive, urinary, immune and respiratory systems. Of course, it has many uses but for my clients I like to use it for digestive problems ranging from issues such as Colitis, ulcers, gastritis, heartburn, constipation/diarrhoea, IBS; respiratory issues such as coughs, sore throats, bronchitis and catarrh; and urinary issues such as cystitis, stones and irritable bowel. It is truly a wonderful herb!

HERB OF THE MONTH: ECHINACEA PURPUREA

I just love the Echinacea this time of year. It is currently in full bloom, what a beauty it is!

Echinacea has become most well known in recent years as an immune booster. For my clients who have a consultation with me, I indeed use Echinacea in this way but it is more than that. It is a great cleanser for your blood and your lymphatic system and for this reason it is great to ward of many infections such as urinary and skin infections; wounds, burns and insect bites. It’s also useful to use in the treatment of joint pains and arthritis as well as a mouth wash for infected gums and sore throats.

I tend to use the tincture form of this herb but you can make tea direct from the plant, but it’s just the purple variety of Echinacea Purpurea which is medicinal. You can use the flowers, leaves and roots. Be warned though, it is bitter tasting and may need to be mixed with sweeter tasting herbs to make it more palatable.

Iridology is a fascinating subject. Look at all these amazing eye patterns. They all mean something and help the iridologist determine information about a person’s systemic health which can then be corrected through diet, herbs and naturopathic practices.

What a fantastic Iridology Networking Weekend I attended this weekend.

As well as being a qualified Naturopath & Herbalist, I am also a qualified Iridologist.

For those of you who haven’t heard of iridology, it is a fascinating subject. I use it on my clients during a consultation as one of my ‘diagnostic’ tools. It can tell me so much about a person. All the amazing different patterns, colours, and other characteristics of the iris help me determine information about a client's systemic health. I then create a bespoke Treatment Plan for the individual using nutrition, naturopathic methods and of course my number one love herbal medicines to help my clients on their journey to good health.

Oooh the lovely lavender is starting to bloom again! I am looking forward to adding some to my homemade herbal teas over the coming weeks mmm! It has so many uses (see below). 😍

The lavender is looking beautiful at the allotment at the moment and is smelling divine! Lavender is a cooling herb and has so many uses. If I am going away, lavender is often the one herb I choose to pack. The most known is its ability to calm anxiety and alleviate insomnia but did you know that it is also helpful for headaches, combat fatigue, can be used as a digestive to alleviate nausea or flatulence. I use it on bites, stings, sprains and even burns. These are just a few of the many wonderful uses that lavender can help you with.

Please reach out and message me if you are interested in booking a herbal medicine consultation.

Have a beautiful day!

At my allotment, and around parks and gardens everywhere, you will see the message nature is giving us. We see the medicinal plants that can help us in springtime for gentle cleansing to help rid us of the excesses of Christmas and winter; and the fattier and stodgier foods we consume, not to mention the alcohol. We have had the cleavers since February/March as well as the nettles, dandelions and lemon balms which are in abundance right now. The Cleavers is starting to die back now making way for the plantains amongst many other wonderful medicinal weeds. It gives us the message that we can all do with using these herbs, and many others, to gently cleanse our blood, livers, kidneys and some of these aforementioned herbs also help the hayfever and seasonal allergies which are around at this time of year as they have astringent and anti-histamine qualities. Nature really does think of everything! Why not pick a few leaves and make a nice cup of herbal tea. 😊

So even herbalists & naturpaths don’t always follow the rules exactly all of the time ie take their herbs and follow the right diet for them. Especially when it’s winter and Christmas and then it stretches out into Easter. Anyway, I’m back on it as I wasn’t feeling as great as I usually do when I take my herbs. So here is me taking my morning ‘shot’ of herbs 😃👍
