Meditation Informed by Focusing - An experiential workshop with Serge Prengel
Wednesday July 30, 2025 | 12:30pm - 2:00pm NY time

Register: https://focusing.org/event/meditation-informed-focusing-0

Traditionally, meditation is an individual practice with the focus being on concentration and awareness, not on connection with others. This approach led by Serge blends moments of meditation and moments of sharing our experiences of meditating. It works both for experienced meditators and those with little to no experience meditating. It helps you learn more about the process and yourself.

After an introductory talk, we will meditate together in silence for 20 minutes. It is freestyle meditation. There will be some guidance to make everybody comfortable with this experience.

Rob Parker studied philosophy with Gene Gendlin for several hours a week from 2003 until Gene's passing in 2017. Rob has been leading A Process Model (APM) reading groups for many years and we are delighted that Rob has teamed up with the Institute to offer these.

Gendlin’s A Process Model is a book about philosophy. But what is philosophy? One answer is that philosophy is the study of different ways of thinking. In particular, A Process Model is about ways of thinking that are so habitual in our culture that we are usually not even aware of them, even as they shape everything we think and do.

Meetings will include reading together and time for questions and discussion. In general Rob will keep the reading portion of the class to 90 minutes, but plan for 2 hours.

Downloadable audio (not video) recordings of Rob’s weekly meetings will be available to all registrants whether or not you attend live.

The Weeklong is the flagship event of The International Focusing Institute (TIFI) and began in 1979. It is a warm and intimate event, and features a certification ceremony. In the early days, anyone who wanted to become certified by the Institute was required to attend a Weeklong. Now, the Weeklong is still a celebration of certification with TIFI, but it is so much more. At the Weeklong, you will connect or re-connect with our warm and diverse international community. It is a rare opportunity to be with an intimate group of advanced practitioners, to learn from one another, to share your wisdom and to live Focusing in community for a week.

We hope that you have already heard the exciting news that we are hosting the next International Focusing Conference in Vienna in June, 2026:

Sensing Forward

We will be honoring Eugene Gendlin's 100th year in the city of his birth!

We want to ensure that this event is "Gene-worthy." That means making it accessible to people for whom registration fees are not affordable, and adding extras where we can.

We are asking you to contribute to make this event as special as it can be!

We are thrilled to share that we have received a generous $10,000 contribution to kickstart this effort.

What's more, the Canaday Family Trust is offering a matching gift challenge: every donation will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $10,000!

If we meet our $10,000 matching challenge, we will reach our primary goal of $30,000.

If we exceed that and reach $40,000, that will allow us to have our full wish list of extras! Read more here.

Please take advantage of this opportunity to make the conference everything it can be!

Thank you for being part of this exciting historic event.

A Focusing-Oriented Coaching Model

Focusing has long found a natural home within the therapeutic profession, given its origins in Eugene Gendlin’s collaboration with Carl Rogers on a landmark study of therapeutic outcomes. Gendlin’s 1996 Focusing-Oriented Therapy (FOT) provided a clear framework for integrating Focusing into professional practice, leading to a thriving international network of FOT practitioners.

This Highlight explores what a Focusing-Oriented Coaching approach can look like. Many coaches have trained in Focusing but often struggle with therapeutic language and examples that don’t fully align with a coaching framework. By bridging this gap, Rod and Charlotte's approach offers a path for coaches to integrate Focusing into their practice in a way that honors both its depth and the distinct nature of coaching.

IMPORTANT: Registration will close on Wednesday June 11 at 12:00 pm.

This is a once-a-month, 6-session Group, reading an edited version of Eugene Gendlin's article "The Small Steps of the Therapy Process: How They Come and How to Help Them Come." The article has been edited to broaden the language away from only the therapeutic process, to help us see the ideas within the article freshly. The article has much to say about the kind of Listening that facilitates both Focusing and TAE, and Beatrice has found it helpful to replace some of Gendlin's words in the article to help it be read in more than just a psychotherapeutic context. The group will be led by Beatrice Blake, assisted by a number of students who are taking her "Listening for Life" program.

Beatrice uses the Spanish word "tertulia" for this type of group interaction: it refers to groups that get together to experience and discuss new ideas, like the "salons" that spread Enlightenment ideas in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries.
