It is profoundly heartbreaking to hear of the passing of a breast cancer survivor. Ananda Lewis was a beacon of inspiration during an era defined by her charm, beauty, and her ability to connect with a global audience on MTV. A cancer diagnosis, especially breast cancer, is something for which no one can truly prepare.

Ananda embodied both beauty and intelligence. As a Black woman, I understand the deep-seated mistrust many in our community have towards the healthcare system. As a three-time breast cancer survivor, I have faced moments of despair where I considered giving up, grappling with my ego and instincts amidst a whirlwind of questions and uncertainties.

It is crucial to remember that seeking a second opinion is not just an option; it is your right. Healthcare is not a fleeting trend; it is a fundamental aspect of life. Doctors are here to guide us, helping us navigate the best possible treatments and paths forward. We cannot undertake this journey alone.

For anyone facing challenges and seeking clarity, please know that we are here for you. If our organization isn’t the right fit, there are countless others that can serve as your second home. Through my experience, I have come to accept that while I once faced cancer, breast cancer does not define my existence. It has not hindered my dreams or aspirations; rather, it has instilled in me a sense of awareness, resilience, and joy.

Run towards your fear; it may just save your life. RIP 💗
