I’m taking a wee break with my loved ones after a very big 2024 involving 12 countries and 40 weeks of rugby, but I will be available for urgent Telehealth consults as this time of year can be a little cray cray when the big kids try out the little kids presents… (scooters/skateboards…) 🤭

The doctor becomes the patient… again! 🤦‍♀️

A couple of weeks ago I twisted my knee doing something so simple as getting out of a car. I heard a big crack and my knee gave way and I hit the deck. A few hours later swelling, pain and weakness and as the weeks progressed things got worse. An MRI revealed a nasty cartilage injury on the medial side of my knee with some significant bone bruising. It’s been a really tough few weeks as I love my running. I’ve even shed a few tears for the loss of what I’ve taken for granted for 45 years!

So I sought help from a fabulous team of professionals Back To Bounce Sports Physiotherapy, sports physician Will Craddock SportsMed Sunshine Coast and Dr Brett Collins, orthopaedic surgeon and perhaps I’ll become an ocean swimmer. 🤣 I’m trying to look at this as a growth opportunity.

I’ve been wearing an Össur Unloading brace to relieve the pain and compression on the joint surface while we try to salvage the astounding muscle wasting that has been occurring over the past 4 weeks. Unfortunately for me my knee has kept giving way and I just can’t trust it to be able to do my job as a Super Rugby Team Doctor with so I’m off for a scope today to see if there is a rogue loose flap of cartilage causing havoc.

The physio team at Back to Bounce have been invaluable in getting some pre-op Prehab exercises going, along with the use of a Compex muscle stimulator machine and I’ll continue to follow up post op.

Never underestimate the benefit of a fabulous physio. After all, exercise is medicine! 💪

I would encourage anyone with knee pain or arthritis to invest in a good physio, exercise and look at the braces. They have been a game changer for me allowing me to at least walk my super active kelpie Bootsy Boy who is dearly missing his trail runs! 🐾

I’ll take you through my journey to recovery as I try and get ready for the first Super Rugby trial in 3 weeks!

What an honour and a whole lot of fun to spend the day with Deputy Mayor Liz McMillan, Mt Hutt GM Cheesey and 500 Canterbury school kids to talk about ski safety and the Snow Safety Code. Thank you so much for having us Canterbury. Boots and I can’t wait to see all you budding skiers and snowboarders riding safely up the mountain! ⛷️ 🏔️

Every day is for my little buddy. But today we celebrate all those doggos and work places around the world enjoying the morale boost and stress relief that having a dog in the workplace brings. (Science says so! 😉)
